Old fire station to serve as community center

LOS ANGELES-The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted 10 to 0
approving the transfer of surplus city property, formerly know as
Fire Station Number 83, to serve as the new community center for the
Armenian Cultural Foundation in Encino.

The motion was co-introduced by City Councilmembers Paul Koretz and
Eric Garcetti and seconded by Paul Krekorian.

“We thank the Los Angeles City Council, especially councilmember
Paul Koretz in whose district Fire Station 83 is situated,” said a
representative of the Encino Armenian community.

“This is a monumental achievement for the San Fernando Valley Armenian
American community. This would not have been possible had it not been
for the efforts of everyone in our community,” added the rep.

“We look forward to bringing this building back to life to service
the needs of the entire community with social, educational, youth
and senior programs,” said the community member.

Another vote on the matter is expected in the future.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
