Records by the National Statistical Service have revealed an increased
number of homeless children in Armenia, the paper says, citing the
National Statistical Service (NSS).
In 2012, the police registered a total of 16 begging and homeless
children (with 4 being girls), instead of the 15 in 2011, says
the paper, referring to the findings. The highest numbers were
reportedly registered in the Gegharkunik and Lori regions – 12 and 9,
respectively. Three of the children were found to be residents of
Shirak region. As for capital Yerevan and the Kotayk region, they
had one homeless child each.
“This is how safe Armenia lives. The [NSS] adds that the official
poverty records have not been made public yet, but last year’s records
suggest that 35% of Armenia’s population is impoverished,” the paper
says, commenting upon the findings.
