CLASHES AT GREEK PROTEST

THESSALONIKI – Police in Greece’s second-largest city have used
pepper spray to disperse protesters at annual rally to protest the
mass killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey nearly a century ago.

About 250 protesters, mostly from Greek-Armenian groups, gathered
Wednesday outside the Turkish consulate in the northern city of
Thessaloniki.

A number of protesters challenged a riot police cordon, demanding
permission to hand a protest petition to consulate staff.

About 20 countries worldwide including Greece, as well as the European
Parliament, recognize the mass killings as an act of genocide,
despite strong objections from Turkey.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
