FRESNO COUNTY OFFERS SYMBOLIC SUPPORT FOR ARMENIANS

In a departure from normal business, the Fresno County Board of
Supervisors on Tuesday offered symbolic support for Armenians living
in a former Soviet region where the leadership is in dispute.

Supervisors passed a resolution recognizing independence of the largely
Armenian territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is inside the sovereign
nation of Azerbaijan. The two states have wrestled over control of
the province.

A representative of the Republic of Armenia, which supports the
Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence, was at Tuesday’s board meeting.

“Every step toward the recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
is a step toward peace and friendly relations in the South Caucasus,”
said Grigor Hovhannissian, consul general for Armenia, in a prepared
statement.

Fresno County’s resolution asks the state Legislature, U.S. Congress
and president to also support Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence.

The resolution, authored by Supervisor Andreas Borgeas, was timed
with commemoration of the 98th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

Fresno County is home to many Armenian immigrants and their families.

Keynote speaker is John M. Evans, former ambassador to Armenia.

Commemoration at the Soghomon Tehlirian Memorial Statue, 1 p.m.,
at the Masis-Ararat Cemetery, 250 N. Hughes Ave., Fresno.
