TURKISH-ARMENIAN CALLS FOR RAISING MINORITIES’ ROLE

An Istanbul based Turkish-Armenian activist has called for
constitutional reforms to raise the ethnic minorities’ role in local
government bodies.
Speaking to the Bianet news website, Tatyos Bebek said the ethnic
minorities residing in the country should enjoy equal rights guaranteed
by the law.
“The Armenians, Greeks, Jaws and Assyrians should have a chance to
become a village governor, policeman, officer or a deputy minister,”
he said, expressing hope that the Turkish Constitution will help put an
end to past grieves, allowing everyone to enjoy freedom and equality.
“In that respect, the citizens who are minority representatives, want
equal rights, not freedoms and privileges. The new Constitution has to
turn a blind eye to ethnic and religious identities. Anyone born in
Turkey and having a mother and father who are Turkish citizens must
be called a citizen of the Turkish republic or [a representative of
the Turkish] nation,” Bebek added.
