Today in Meghradzor village an incident was recorded between the
farmers and the environmental organizations, although there was no
cause for quarrel.
The environmentalists had come to hold a discussion with the farmers
about starting the operation of the gold mine of Meghradzor with
cyanic methods.
The farmers, a vast majority of who are employees in “Meghradzor Gold”
company expressed their position that they were against it and
rejected the cyanide mine operation method.
” We have analyzed this issue a few months ago we have come to an
agreement with the director of the gold mine that in Meghradzor gold
production with cyanide extraction will not be” ,-village head of
Meghradzor Karlen Hovhannisyan said.
Whereas the head of “Ecological Academy” NGO Greta Gabrielyan notes:
“Usually this is done when all public hearings have already been done,
the community has given agreement and only in this case it is
presented to the ministry, expecting to get a positive conclusion”,-
Gabrielyan says.
In response to this statement, Meghradzor residents were claiming that
they had already expressed their position and were not going to change
their mind.
After a long debate-discussion the environmentalists were insisting
that the operation of the mine with the mentioned methods should not
be allowed by no means, especially considering the fact that
Meghradzor is a resort area with great deal of residential communities
nearby. They mentioned that the “robbery” of gold mines could be
continued in Ararat, as it was functioning for a long time.
