APPROXIMATELY 40-50% OF LARGE BUSINESSES AND STATE AGENCIES IN ARMENIA REFUSED TO USE PIRATED SOFTWARE

YEREVAN, March 6. / ARKA /. To date, approximately 40-50% of large
businesses and state agencies in Armenia refused to use pirated
software and switched to licensed products, Grigor Barseghian, head
of Microsoft Armenia, said to a news conference today.

“Many people have come to realize the threats stemming from use of
pirated software, because if five years ago all these threats looked
something virtual, today, due to unprecedented increase in access to
Internet, they are coming to the fore,” he said.

“In 2006, when the Armenian office of Microsoft just opened about 96
percent of used software was pirated; in 2011 the figure dropped to
88%,” Barseghian said, adding that the data for 2012 will be published
only in a month .

Noting that the use of pirated software has more to do with the
mentality of the Armenian society than financial conditions Barseghian
said there are many people who often do not distinguish pirated
software from licensed, or have no idea about possible dangers of
pirated software.

However, he said, a lot of time will pass before most of Armenian
users will switch to using licensed software.

“The process can not happen quickly, since we are talking about
thousands of PCs, and not all are willing to spend money on purchasing
licensed products,” he added. -0-

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
