Memorial concert will honor pastor

By Ron Orozco – The Fresno Bee

The Armenian faith community is coming together for a special memorial
concert to honor the memory of the Rev. Bernard Guekguezian, pastor
emeritus of First Armenian Presbyterian Church. He died Sept. 22 at
age 85.

Guekguezian served as pastor of First Armenian Presbyterian Church for
22 years, from 1978 to 2000.

The memorial concert is at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Pilgrim Armenian
Congregational Church, 3673 N. First St. Guekguezian’s son, the Rev.
Ara R. Guekguezian, is senior pastor of Pilgrim Armenian
Congregational Church.

The Chookasian Armenian Concert Ensemble, recipient of Armenia’s
National Gold Medal Award, will perform Armenian music. The group
features conservatory graduate musicians from Armenia and the United
States. The musicians perform on ancient, traditional acoustic folk
instruments that have been used by Armenians for centuries.

Proceeds will benefit the Bernard Guekguezian Scholarship Fund.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
