Candidate for president of Armenia to protest in Yerevan

15 February 2013 – 9:34am

Paruyr Ayrikyan, a candidate for president of Armenia shot in a
shoulder on January 31, has urged people to rally for the final
protests at the Freedom Square in Yerevan on February 16, Tert.am
reports.

Ayrikyan refused to postpone the elections, despite his wound. He said
that he would not want Andreas Gukasyan, a candidate for president on
hunger strike, to suffer two more weeks of the strike.

Armenia will have the sixth presidential polls on February 18.

7 candidates are running for president: President Serzh Sargsyan,
former PM and leader of the Freedom Party Grant Bagratyan, former
Foreign Minister and leader of the Heritage Party Raffi Ovannisyan,
leader of the National Self-Determination Union Paruyr Ayrikyan,
former Foreign Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh Arman Melikyan, a
political analyst of Radio Hay Andreas Gukasyan and a researcher of
epos Vardan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
