YEREVAN, Feb. 16 – Armenians will go to the polls on Monday to elect
a president from candidates including incumbent leader Serzh Sargsyan
and former government officials.

The vice speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, Edward
Sharmazanov, on Saturday told foreign press here that the country is
now ready for the election.

Saturday was the last day of the official Armenian presidential
campaign which kicked off on Jan. 21.

The Armenian central electoral commission has so far registered
2,505,822 voters who are expected to cast ballots in 1,988 polling
stations across the country in 41 electoral districts.

The candidates include President Sargsyan, former foreign minister
Raffi Hovannisian, former prime minister Hrant Bagratyan, former
Soviet dissident Paruyr Hayrikian and political analyst Andrias
Ghukasian.

Balloting will last 12 hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, with the
official final results scheduled to be released by the central
electoral commission on Feb. 25.

The Armenian central electoral commission has pledged to assist a
free, fair and transparent presidential election this year.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which
has been monitoring Armenian elections since 1996, on Saturday
dispatched some 270 observers to various polling stations around the
country.

The OSCE observers were invited by Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
