Turkey must open border without preconditions – Armenian president

Armenia’s capital hosted on Friday the 2nd Eastern Partnership Summit
of European Peoples Party (EPP).
Armenia’s President, Chairman of the ruling Republican Party of
Armenia (RPA) Serzh Sargsyan , as well as President of the European
People’s Party (EPP) Wilfried Martens, President of the European
Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso, President of Georgia Mikheil
Saakashvili and Prime Minister of Moldova Vlad Filate summed up the
summit at a meeting with journalists.
The Armenian leader made a statement in which, among other issues, he
addressed the issue of closed borders with Turkey. President Serzh
Sargsyan stressed that the border must be opened immediately and
without any preconditions.
`We cannot but be concerned over the fact that Turkey, which is
seeking membership in the European Union, is maintaining an illegal
blockade against Armenia. We are sure that the last closed border in
Europe must be opened immediately and without any preconditions. We
discussed the ways of promoting democratization process in the
European Partnership member-states, ensuring access to European
markets for our producers, facilitating contacts between our citizens,
relaxing and, later, waiving visa requirements. Our citizens are
expecting that.
`Three Armenian parties’ membership in the EPP gave new impetus to the
Armenia-EU dialogue. We are grateful to all of our partners for that,’
President Serzh Sargsyan said.
