Baku: Turkey To Apply To International Organisations To Close Metsam

TURKEY TO APPLY TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS TO CLOSE METSAMOR NPP

The activity of Metsamor (Armenian) NPP, the life of which has expired,
is a greater threat to the entire region, so Turkey will appeal to
all international organisations for its closure, Turkish MP Sinan
Ogan told Trend.

Ogan said the activities of Metsamor NPP are equivalent to the risk
of an atomic explosion, not only for Turkey, but also for the entire
region, including Armenia.

“Turkey is using international law and will appeal to all international
organisations to close the Metsamor nuclear power plant” Ogan said.

He added that the Turkish parliament has launched a campaign to
close Metsamor NPP, but it is too early to talk about the results
of this work. The MP also noted the role of NGOs in the campaign and
cooperation of non-governmental organisations in the region.

“As a member of the Turkish parliament, I encourage all
non-governmental organisations in the region to become more involved
in the campaign to close the Metsamor nuclear power plant, as its
activities endanger the lives of all the inhabitants of the region,”
the MP said.

Earlier, Turkish media reported that the Armenian government has
decided to extend the work of Metsamor until 2023.

Metsamor NPP was built in 1970. After the devastating earthquake
in Spitak in 1988 it was closed, but in 1995 despite international
protests, the activities of the station were resumed and the second
reactor was launched.

Given the large number of minor earthquakes in the past 10 years in
this area, as well as the intensification of seismic processes as
indicated by research of seismologists, in the event of a serious
accident at the Metsamor NPP not only Armenia, but also all the
countries of South Caucasus and the Middle East will seriously suffer.
