Karen Taroyan, the inmate who was earlier reported to have cut his
little finger amid a hunger-strike, still continues his protest
together with two detainees.

A spokesperson for the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Department,
Gor Ghlechyan, told Tert.am that all three are in a prison cell and
under doctors’ observation.

Serob Mkhitaryan, a convict who was earlier among the hunger-strikers,
stopped the protest on Friday.

The protesting inmates had sent three appeals to the human rights
defender. Taroyan, who now serves time in Nubarashen Penitentiary,
asked for moving to a penitentiary facility to Sevan or Hrazdan on
the grounds that his family (wife and children) cannot visit there.

Vardan Demirchyan, one of the detainees, said he suffered from a
mental disease and sought a treatment at the hospital of convicts.

Mkhitaryan, who is no longer on a hunger-strike, called for Ombudsman’s
intervention in changing his prison cell. Demirchyan had fears that
his life was under threat in the cell where he was serving time.

Ghlechyan told our reporter that Mkhitaryan’s appeal was taken into
consideration and he is now in a new cell.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
