Armenia end Wales’ Euro hopes
Ten-man Wales’ hopes of reaching next summer’s European Under-21
Championship finals were brought to an end by a 1-0 defeat to Armenia.
New boss Geraint Williams went into the game at Wrexham in the
knowledge that defeat would spell the end of his side’s hopes of
claiming at least a runners-up position with one game to spare.
But the home side never recovered from David Stephens’ sending-off in
the sixth minute for handball, after which Hovhannes Hambardzumyan
struck the opener from the penalty spot.
Hambardzumyan missed a second penalty but Wales failed to fight their
way back into the match, meaning next month’s final Group Three trip
to the Czech Republic is irrelevant to their hopes of qualification.
