YEREVAN, July 3. /ARKA/. Armenian ministries of agriculture and energy
and natural resources signed today a memorandum of understanding to
help start production of fertilizers at Vanadzor-Khimprom chemical
plant in August.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony agricultural
minister, Sergo Karapetian, said both ministries will show support
for the plant in Armenia’s third largest town to resume production
of chemical fertilizers.

“Today we import all fertilizers used by our farmers. This is why it
is very important for us to organize a local production of chemical
fertilizers,” Karapetian said.

The minister said in the first phase the plant will produce nitric
fertilizers – carbamide and ammonium sulphate, and in the future it
may start producing also phosphate fertilizers. The minister said
that plant has the capacity to produce up to 25,000 tons of carbamide
and ammonium sulphate per year. The local demand for this type of
fertilizers is 35,000 tons, he said.

According to Karapetian, Armenian fertilizers will cost significantly
cheaper, but he refrained fr om specifying.

According to the ministry of agriculture, Armenia’s agricultural
sector uses today about 40 thousand of all types of fertilizers,
including nitric, potassium and phosphorus.

Vanadzor Kimprom, which is part of Prometey -Khimprom company, was
commissioned in 2005 after a long idle period. The plant is owned by
a British-registered Russian company Roding International Lim ited.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
