ARMENIA: GREENHOUSE PROJECT WITH DUTCH TECHNOLOGY GETS OFF THE GROUND

The combination of the Armenian climate and Dutch technologies are
paving the way for greenhouse development and fresh produce exports
for Armenia.
An investment programme is leading to the construction of massive
greenhouses in the country. Undeveloped land in various regions is
being made available, over a total area of 2,000 ha.
The project has been initiated by the Armenian Harvest Promotion
Centre. They calculate that between 300,000 and 350,000 tonnes of
produce can be grown in heated greenhouses each year, along with 75,000
tonnes over 1,500 ha of unheated polycarbonate greenhouses. The bulk
of the produce is intended for export via Russian trade networks.
The AHPC communicates with investors who express interest in buying
land for greenhouse construction and will provide the speculators with
relevant infrastructure, including utilities and also the provision
of loans.
“This is an unprecedented large-scale program which will promote
the development of the infrastructures, transportation channels,
and the establishment of powerful cool storage facilities,” said
Aleksan Arakelyan, the Investment Director at the Armenian Harvest
Promotion Centre CJSC. According to his estimations, the first crop
will be harvested in 2013.
The Armenian Harvest Promotion Centre CJSC was established in 2011. It
is a public and private partnership where 49 percent of the shares
are held by Small and Medium Entrepreneurship Development National
Center established by the RA Government, and 51 percent is owned by
the private sector.
