MASHTOTS CLEANUP: KIOSKS GONE, “GREENING” PROMISED

The kiosks that provoked months of protest and disturbance in Yerevan’s
Mashtots Park have been dismantled, with promise of “greening” the
park in the coming days.

The small free-standing shopping booths had been a flashpoint of
protest led by environmentalists who argued that placing them in the
park was a violation of law, as no public discussion had been held
on the matter.

On May 1, five days before parliamentary elections swept by his party,
President Serzh Sargsyan paid an unannounced visited to the park along
with Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan. The president ordered the mayor
to dismantled the kiosks, on the grounds that they were unattractive.

In related news, police have launched criminal proceedings against
some of the activists who engaged in fights with police on April
29, when the demonstrations reached there most contentious point,
apparently provoking the president’s campaign visit to the park.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
