Member of Sardarapat Movement Artavazd Vardanyan, who has been holding
a hunger-strike in front of the Central Election Commission (CEC)
since last week, says several friends were on duty there this night
to keep an eye on him.

“By the way, people – absolutely unfamiliar individuals – were
approaching me to express their support,” he told Tert.am.

The police did not allow the protester to set up a tent yesterday
afternoon, saying that it would hinder people’s movement in the street.

Vardanyan went on a hunger strike on May 3, calling for “alternative
elections in Armenia”. Feeling physically weak, he wanted a tent to
lie in, as well as protect himself from the sun and rainfalls. The
activist was kidnapped and driven to his house last night, and asked
not to protest outside the CEC any more.

Asked when he will stop the hunger-strike, Vardanyan said he is
still undecided.

Doctors visiting the activist periodically told him about a high blood
pressure problem and offered him an injection drug, but he rejected
any injection saying that he does not want additional substances to
penetrate his body.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
