Exploding balloons injure 144 in Armenia
Reuters May 4, 2012 4:11 PM
YEREVAN, Armenia – An explosion injured at least 144 in central
Yerevan on Friday during a campaign rally by Armenia’s ruling party
two days before a parliamentary election, a local emergency official
was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
Local media said it appeared that gas-filled balloons had exploded at
the rally in the central Republic Square after being ignited by a
cigarette.
Sunday’s election is widely seen as a test of democracy and a
potential challenge for President Serzh Sarksyan, elected in 2008.
