Armenia is tightening security on its border with Azerbaijan

YEREVAN. May 4

Armenian President Serzh Sargsian has bound Defense Minister Seiran
Oganian to build up security on the Armenian-Azeri border.

At the Armenian presidential press service, Interfax was told that on
Friday Sargsian visited the Defense Ministry where he heard reports of
the defense minister and chief of the General Staff of the Armed
Forces.

The military officials reported on the status of efforts to increase
the combat capability of the Armed Forces, the military-political
situation in the region, the current situation on the Armenian-Azeri
border, and efforts to maintain a calm situation on the separation
line.

“Sargsian gave orders on building up security on the separation line
of Armenian and Azeri forces, and adopting long-term measures to
enhance combat capability and discipline,” the presidential press
service said.

At the end of April, Sargsian declared that Armenia was ready to
respond to Azeri fire at Armenian positions. He spoke after three
Armenian servicemen fell victim to Azeri fire in the Tavush region in
northeast Armenia. One more serviceman was killed in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
