The word “genocide” corresponds to the description of the crime
committed against the Armenians. Luis Almagro, the Foreign Affairs
Minister of Uruguay, stated this during the event held on Tuesday-and
in connection with 97th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide-at
Armenia Square of Montevideo, RFE/RL informs.

Speaking on behalf of Uruguay’s executive authorities, Almagro
reaffirmed the position of his country, which, in 1965, was the first
in the world to formally recognize the Genocide.

The FM underscored the need to establish an international tribunal
to condemn such crimes against humanity.

Also, he expressed a positive view with respect to curtailing, by laws,
the policy of genocide denial.

The Uruguayan FM concluded his remarks by informing that he will pay
his first official visit to Armenia in the coming weeks.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
