Baku, March 30, IRNA – Azerbaijani Presidential Administration
Social and Political Department Chief Ali Hasanov stressed Thursday
on development of relations with Iran, adding that some forces try
to damage Azerbaijan-Iran relations.
He made the remark in a statement released in reaction to some Western
press reports indicating that the occupier Zionist regime forces may
uses the territory of Azerbaijan against Iran.
“I repeat the thesis that we have already stated many times: Azerbaijan
didn’t, doesn’t and will not allow any action against Iran, Turkey,
Russia and Georgia from its territory.”
Hasanov called these reports a speculation by some forces, which try
to provoke tensions between the sides.
“Some separate opposition forces or international organizations and
their press are trying to use the current situation around Iran,
to provoke confrontation between Iran and Azerbaijan, to damage
relations between the two countries and to sow discord between them.”
“We synonymously urge those countries and forces that they will not
achieve their goals. No one can damage the relations between Azerbaijan
and Iran and other neighbor countries.”
Recently, Foreign Policy published a report claiming: “Four senior
diplomats and military intelligence officers say that the United
States has concluded that Israel has recently been granted access to
airbases on Iran’s northern border.”
The Foreign Policy report claimed also that Azerbaijani authorities
have ruled out the use of their country for a strike on Iran; however,
it goes on to recognize that other kinds of support could still be
given to Israel by Azerbaijan to ease a possible Israeli attack on
Iran, such as providing landing rights after a strike and basing
search-and-rescue units in their country.
Iran has an embassy in Baku and a consulate-general in the autonomous
republic of Nakhichevan. Azerbaijan has an embassy in Tehran and a
consulate-general in Tabriz.
Iran and Azerbaijan have had diplomatic relations since the latter’s
independence from the former Soviet Union. The two countries have a
majority Shia population and share many cultural commonalities.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has made extensive mediation efforts to
settle the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Karabakh.
