In contrast to the sociologist Aharon Adibekyan, Gevorg Poghosyan,
Chairman of the Scientific Council, Institute of Philosophy, Sociology
and Law, agrees with the results of the poll entitled “Poll: A Snapshot
of Pre-Electoral Armenia” published by the European Friends of Armenia
(EuFoA).

A survey conducted by a Poghosyan-headed team showed similar results.

“The only difference is that their poll showed the Prosperous Armenia
Party’s rating 2% higher than that of the ruling Republican Party of
Armenia,” Poghosyan said.

According to a poll the EuFoA conducted this February, 27.1% of the
respondents were ready to vote for the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP),
24.5% for the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), and 16.6% proved
wavering. The others favored the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), Rule of Law, Heritage party and the opposition
bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC).

At his earlier press conference, Gevorg Poghosyan mentioned 15%
of undecided voters.

“The election campaign had not yet been launched. I might have
influenced the parties’ lists. However, since I know our voters well
I know that they get acquainted with all this too late. Journalists,
political figures and sociologists are the first to know,” Poghosyan
said.

With respect to party lists, the expert said that almost all the
political forces tried to “update” their lists, which is evidence
they are expecting strong competition.

Poghosyan is optimistic about it. He believes that political monopoly
has given way to political competition.

“Given the present situation, even the RPA and the PAP cannot be sure
of gaining a majority in parliament,” the expert said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
