In the 21st century the traditional image of a woman and the call of
the times contradict each other, Director of Sociometer Aharon
Adibekyan said at today’s press conference. He thinks that today the
woman herself underestimates her abilities, while the 21st century
demands that the opportunities of the women and the men should be
equal.

Adibekyan pointed out that since ancient times men have traditionally
been considered to be carriers of culture in the Armenian mentality.
This circumstance disturbs the Armenian women to conduct public and
political activity. According to him, the results of the public
opinion polls demonstrate that 30% of the respondents prefer voting
for women candidates, 40% prefer voting for men.

Adibekyan said that today there are unfortunately only two women
ministers, whereas their number could have been more. He added that
60% of Armenian students are females; however, the majority of
unemployed are women. The state makes a huge contribution to women’s
education, but creates no conditions for them to work. In addition,
the Armenian women only care for their families, and their career
relegates to the sidelines, he said.

In the meantime, women are more disciplined in work and very often
they agree to work for a lower salary than men, therefore, the
international organizations that open their branches in Armenia, are
mostly interested in hiring women.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
