Those against the construction of a shopping mall in the area in which
Hrazdan stadium is situated – including the Union of Architects of
Armenia, Yerevan’s Orhus Center and several other NGOs and groups –
are concerned that a shopping mall built on the site will endanger
the safety of those in the stadium.

“An evacuation zone is necessary, since without it, it will be
impossible to safely evacuate people from the stadium during large
events in case of an emergency,” said Orhus Center coordinator Silva
Ayvazyan, presenting her arguments to Epress.am.

Ayvazyan also noted that the Hrazdan stadium is considered one
of the city’s historical and cultural buildings and has strategic
significance.

A discussion on this topic will take place at Orhus Center at 3 pm
today. Invited to the discussion are representatives from Yerevan City
Hall, RA Ministry of Culture, RA Ministry of Urban Development, RA
Ministry of Emergency Situations, RA Ministry of Nature Protection,
Football Federation of Armenia, Union of Architects of Armenia,
media and NGOs.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
