RESHUFFLINGS AIM TO STRENGTHEN PRESIDENT’S POSITIONS – POLITICIAN

By sacking officials, President Serzh Sargsyan is attempting to
strengthen his positions, according to the leader of the Social
Democratic Hnchakyan party.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Lyudmila Sargsyan said she
does not find the recent reshufflings unexpected.

She said [former] Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan quit office because of
his pro-Russian views that appeared incompatible with the authorities’
policies. As regards National Assembly Chairman Hovik Avrahamyan,
who resigned earlier this week, Sargsyan said he backed the second
the president, Robert Kocharyan, without ever demonstrating loyalty
to the incumbent president.

“As for [Prosperous Armenia Party leader] Gagik Tsarukyan, he has
a joint business with Kocharyan and may cease to be loyal to Serzh
Sargsyan at any moment,” she noted.

Sargsyan went on to comment on the resignation of Mikael Minasyan as
the deputy head of the presidential staff. She explained the move
by the president’s recent visit to Russia, adding that Minasyan’s
pro-western views have a great influence on Serzh Sargsyan.

“That’s why Serzh Sargsyan was asked in Russia to reconsider his
position,” she said, not ruling out the possibility of new resignations
in the near future.

She noted however that the reshufflings are unlikely to yield any
progress to satisfy the people.

“Serzh Sargsyan does not have appropriate human resources to replace
those people,” she added.

The Social Democratic Hnchakyan party is a political force represented
in the opposition alliance Armenian National Congress (ANC).

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
