Hovik Abrahamyan has given an interview to the Armenian service of
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) to comment on the reasons
of his resignation as the chairman of Armenia’s National Assembly.

Abrahamyan said he is going to lead the campaign headquarter of the
ruling Republican Party ahead of the 2012 parliamentary election.

“As a result of our discussions with the president, we made a joint
decision. The president proposed that I lead the Republican Party’s
campaign headquarters,” he said, adding that he found the proposal
very important from several aspects.

He first stressed the importance of a free and fair election as a
priority task for Armenia in terms of the country’s EU integration
efforts.

“It is very important for our country to hold a free, fair and
transparent election in 2012. It is a kind of test for us because we ~V
both the president and all others ~V have said on many occasions that
integration to the European family is a priority task for all of us.

The Armenian authorities are now actively collaborating with the EU,
European Parliament and international organizations so free, fair
and transparent elections are an important touchstone for us given
that we have a new Electoral Code,” he said.

Emphasizing that President Serzh Sargsyan and the Republican Party
also attach much importance to the position, Abrahamyan said he does
not want to combine two activities simultaneously or cast a shadow
on the post of the National Assembly’s speaker.

“I find it better to work there, directing all my potentials to that
job. That’s all; there’s no other goal. I just want to prove I do not
cling to my post. I can lead successfully the headquarters without
being a chairman of the National Assembly,” he added.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
