ARMENIA’S PRESS ON LATEST AND EXPECTED DISMISSALS

Armenia’s press is covering the previous and expected dismissals of
top-level government officials.

The press particularly comments on the Oct. 31 meeting of the
Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).

The Hraparak newspaper reports that at the meeting Armenian President
and RPA Chairman Serzh Sargsyan announced personnel changes in the
military and law-enforcement branch.

“Deputy Minister of Defense Vladmir Gasparyan will replace Chief
of Armenia’s police Alik Sargsyan. The latter was expected to be
appointed to the post now held by Armen Gevorgyan. Later, however,
it was made clear that the time for ‘disturbing’ Kocharyan’s people
had not yet come. Mr. Alik Sargsyan will be appointed deputy head of
the Armenian presidential staff, which may be considered equivalent
to his current position.”

The newspaper also comments on the discussions of candidates for the
post of Yerevan vice-mayor after Mr. Taron Margaryan was appointed
Yerevan mayor. According to the information at the newspaper’s
disposal, the meeting discussed three candidates: Mrs. Naira
Nahapetyan, a member of the RPA Women’s Council, Mr Enok Azatyan,
Director of the National institute of Standards, and Arman Madatyan,
son of Eduard Madatyan and relative of the ex-prefect of Yerevan’s
Erebuni community Mher Sedrakyan. By appointing Mr Madatyan President
Serzh Sargsyan will please two persons at a time – both of them may
be helpful to him in the coming elections,” the newspaper writes.

Irapes de facto writes that rumors about Chief of Armenian police Alik
Sargsyan’s possible resignation and new appointment were persistent
on Oct. 31. Deputy Minister of Defense Vladmir Gasparyan is expected
to replace him.

“Toward the end of the evening it was a fact. Vladimir Gasparyan was
appointed Chief of Armenia’s police, and Alik Sargsyan Deputy Head
of the Armenian presidential staff. Moreover, the Executive Council
of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) appointed Taron Margaryan
Yerevan mayor.

“Is that an end to personnel changes? We do not think so.”

Referring to reliable sources, Haykakan Zhamanak reports that
Armenia’s Ministry of Defense will soon become a “parade-ground”
for resignations.

Rumor has it that the resignations of Minister of Defense Seyran
Ohanyan and Chief of the Joint Staff Yuri Khachaturov are on the
agenda. The sources say that First Deputy Minister of Defense David
Tonoyan will replace Seyran Ohanyan and Deputy Minister of Defense
Alik Mirzabekyan will replace Yuri Khachaturov.
