Armenian intellectuals launch foundation to promote cultural development

16:03 – 22.10.11

Prominent Armenian cultural figures have launched a foundation-council
that will help solve existing problems in the country’s cultural life,
the council’s chairperson, composer Robert Amirkhanyan told a press
conference.

The foundation’s mission is also to contribute to the preservation and
development of cultural life in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as ensuring
the equal cultural development in the capital Yerevan and provinces.

Amirkhanyan also said that the founder of the foundation-council is
Gagik Tsarukyan, Head of the Prosperous Armenian party.

`We are now talking about a baby that wants to be born and live a
healthy life,’ said he, adding that they are concerned over how
Armenians spend their evening time – one of the reasons they decided
to launch this foundation-council.

The council consists of eleven members, among them such figures as
Jivan Gasparyan, Ara Khzmalyan, Alexander Grigoryan, Zhirayr Altunyan
and others.

Asked whether the initiation of the council means that the Ministry of
Culture somehow fails in its mission he Amirkhanyan said: `Yes,
somehow it does mean so … The budget of the Ministry of Culture is not
insufficient, however, some of the most serious programs are left out
of attention.’

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
