SOUTH CAUCASUS RAILWAYS POST 8.4 PERCENT RISE IN CARGO FREIGHT

YEREVAN, October 21 / ARKA /. The Russian-owned South Caucasus Railways
company, operating Armenia’s railroads, said today it transported
2.370.1 million metric tons of cargo in the first nine months of 2011,
by 8.3% more than in the same time span in 2010.
According to a company’s press release, sent to ARKA, the actual volume
of railroading was 8.6% higher than projected for January-September.
The company said it transported outside the country 326,800 metric
tons of goods, a 33.9% year-on-year rise and brought to the country
992.800 tons of cargo, by 5.8% less from a year earlier. The volume
of domestically transported cargo grew by 18.3% to 1.050 million tons.
“The South Caucasus Railways is gradually increasing its performance
indicators, including the volume of freight. These results were due to
introduction of a flexible tariff policy aimed at reducing transport
costs,” the press release says.
