Turkey’s Ambassador to France Tahsin Burcuoglu expressed Ankara’s
concern about Nicolas Sarkozy’s recent remarks during his meeting
with French President’s foreign policy advisor Jean-David Levitte.

The envoy also wrote a letter to prominent Socialist candidate
Francois Hollande calling not to turn Turkey into a foreign policy
tool, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

“The message we have conveyed does not solely refer to Sarkozy, but to
the entire French political class. We have underlined that this kind
of rhetoric does not serve anything other than to ruin our bilateral
relations. We want to improve our relations, but these statements are
not helpful to this end. We know all French politicians are making
similar statements, but Sarkozy was very careless in doing so as
he tried to threaten Turkey just a few steps away from our soil,”
the newspaper quotes the diplomat.

According to the daily, Levite tried “to depict Sarkozy’s words as
candid advice from a friendly country” but Burcuoglu recalled Algeria
was France’s colony when the 1915 incident took place.

During his visit to Armenia, Nicolas Sarkozy slammed Turkey for not
recognizing the Armenian Genocide, adding France should adopt a law
prosecuting the denial of Armenian Genocide in case Turkey refuses
to acknowledge its past.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
