SARKOZY URGES TURKEY TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

“If Turkey fails to revisit its history, France will adopt a law
criminalizing the denial of Armenian Genocide,” French President
Nicolas Sarkozy declared at a joint press conference with Armenian
president Serzh Sargsyan.
“Collective denial is worse than individual denial,” Sarkozy said,
adding, however that it does not mean individual denial is acceptable.
“If a great country like Turkey recognizes the black pages of its
history – the genocide at the turn of the last century – France
and Armenia will view it as a “gesture of peace.” However, lasting
reconciliation is impossible on the basis of denial of historic facts,”
the French President declared, stressing that if Turkey revisited
its history, looked it in the face, with its shadows and highlights,
the recognition of the genocide by France would be sufficient.
“But if Turkey fails to do this, then without a doubt it would be
necessary to go further,” Sarkozy stated.
