The US envoy in Baku has responded to an appeal to President Obama
about Nagorno-Karabakh from more than 1,000 Azerbaijani women.
At the initiative of the Karabakh Liberation Organization’s women’s
council, the appeal was sent to the UN secretary general and the
presidents of France, Russia and the USA. Those three countries
co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body mediating a
solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Ambassador Matthew Bryza set out the US position on the conflict in
his letter to the chairwoman of the women’s council, Farida Asgarova,
the Karabakh Liberation Organization press service reported.
“The peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is a priority
for President Obama and Secretary Clinton. Therefore it is a priority
for me, as the US ambassador to Azerbaijan,” Bryza said.
He noted in his letter that only a peaceful settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict could ensure the development of Azerbaijan
and stability in the whole South Caucasus: “As the ambassador,
I will do my best to support the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group
and the conflict parties to prevent hostilities from flaring up and
to achieve a fair, peaceful and long-term solution to the conflict
through negotiations.”
The Karabakh Liberation Organization’s women’s council thanked the
ambassador for his quick response and hoped to receive replies from
the UN representation, Russian and French embassies.
