YEREVAN. – Releasing political prisoners is a positive fact, but
the way it is done is unacceptable, informed head of the opposition
Heritage group in parliament Stepan Safaryan to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“I cannot assess ambiguously without having seen the text, however,
releasing political prisoners is a great asset,” stated Safaryan. “In
addition, amnesty is forgiveness for a crime not a justification.”

Armenia had political prisoners after elections in 2003, however,
later they were released. In 2008 after presidential elections more
people were sentenced and considered political prisoners. Some of them
were released earlier and the rest will be released in the coming
days. However, following this tradition, Armenia will always have
political prisoners, added Safaryan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
