An Armenian Foreign Ministry delegation headed by RA Deputy
Foreign Minster Arman Kirakosyan arrived in Deir ez-Zor, a city in
northeastern Syria on the Euphrates River and capital of the Deir
ez-Zor Governorate, 450 km from Damascus. During the Armenian Genocide
of 1915, Deir ez-Zor became the final destination for Armenian refugees
who were driven out from their homeland in a long march across the
Syrian desert.
According to a press release issued by the Armenian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, the delegation from Armenia was welcomed by Deir
ez-Zor Governor Husain Arnus and head of the Baas Party’s office in
Deir ez-Zor Taha Khalifa.
Those present agreed on the importance of opening up a RA Honorary
Consulate in Deir ez-Zor and hoped it would be a bridge in a effort
to strenghten trade, cultural and scientific-technical cooperation
between the Republic of Armenia and Deir ez-Zor’s Governorate.
On the same day, a ceremony annointing Armenia’s flag took place in
an Armenian church. Among present were the three spiritual leaders
of Armenian community in Syria, as well as provincial officials and
numerous Syrian-Armenian community respresentatives.
Further, an evening ceremony was organized with newly appointed Deir
ez-Zor Honorary Consul of Armenia Suren Vardanyan delivering a speech.
