Real Salt Lake notched its first home victory in more than two months
by downing Toronto 3-0 in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Real went ahead in the 21st minute when Armenian forward Yura Movsisyan
intercepted a pass in the center circle, charged away from two markers
into the penalty area where he chipped the onrushing goalkeeper.
Kyle Beckerman made it 2-0 just before halftime. Immediately after
having a shot spectacularly saved, Beckerman was on the end of a
cross from Argentine midfielder Javier Morales.
Veteran American midfield international Clint Mathis made sure of the
points in the 78th minute, with a well-placed shot into the corner
of the net.
Columbus 1, New York 0 In Columbus, Ohio, Chad Marshall scored late
in the first half as Columbus edged New York in a reprise of last
year’s title decider.
Marshall scored his second goal of the season off a corner by veteran
Argentine playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto in the 45th minute.
Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer was only called upon to make
one save in his return from a nine-game absence with knee and back
injuries.
Columbus has won four straight at home after opening the season with
three draws and moved into a tie with Toronto for second place in
the Eastern Conference, one point behind leaders D.C. United.
New York had its MLS-record, regular-season road winless streak
extended to 22 matches. It is winless in nine overall.
