ARMENIAN PRESIDENT: ARMENIA IS READY TO SUPPORT GEORGIA IN IMPROVING SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION IN SAMTSKHE-JAVAKHETI REGION

ArmInfo. The Armenian community of Georgia was and remains the
strongest bridge connecting Armenia and Georgia, Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan said during a joint press-conference with Georgian
President Mikheil Saakashvili, Wednesday.

"We welcome the steps taken by the Georgian government to
dampen the socio-economic situation in Armenian-populated region
Samtskhe-Javakheti, improve the quality of infrastructures and create
new job positions. Armenia is ready to support this process",-
President Sargsyan said. He informed his Georgian counterpart of
the current stage of Karabakh peace process, as well as prospects
of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. Serzh Sargsyan
once again confirmed the official position of Yerevan based on
normalization of relations without any preconditions. "Despite the
existing discrepancies, the countries of the region should find
contact points for development.

Armenia wants to have a peaceful, stable and prospering neighbor –
Georgia, with which it has not only a common past, but also a common
future.

Therefore, we agreed with the Georgian president to activate the
processes of communication of our citizens, exchange students and
increase cultural ties",- he said and brought the example of Days
of Georgian Culture held in Armenia and Days of Armenian Culture in
Georgia to be held in 2010. The presidents also agreed to hold annual
Armenian-Georgian sport games and olympiads among schoolchildren. The
first olympiad is likely to take place in autumn 2009.
