DAILY BIBLE READINGS
Bible readings for today, Friday, August 8 are: 2 Timothy 3:1-7; John
6:64-71
But among you there are some who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the
first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would
betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can
come to me unless it is granted by the Father."
Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went
about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of
eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of
God." Jesus answered the, "Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you
is a devil." He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for he, though
one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (John 6:64-71)

TWO HUNDRED HOLY FATHERS OF THE
ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF EPHESUS
This Saturday, August 9, the Armenian Church commemorates the 200 Holy
Fathers of the Council of Ephesus (431 AD). Ephesus, the third general
council, was convened upon the order of Emperor Theodosius II to settle the
Nestorian heresy. A large number of high-ranking church leaders attended,
headed by Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria. The principle decision of the
Council was the condemnation of Nestorius. The Council excommunicated
Nestorius and condemned the heresy, affirmed the Nicene Creed, and approved
the title of Theotokos (God-bearer) for the Virgin Mary.
The Armenian Church accepted the canons and decisions of the Council and
designated a day in the church calendar on the Saturday of the Paregentan of
the Assumption. The Armenian Church recognizes the first three councils:
Nicaea (325); Constantinople (381); and Ephesus (431), with special days in
the liturgical calendar for all three.
Ephesus was the chief city of the Roman province of Asia at the
crossroads of the coastal route between Smyrna and Cyzicus. The Temple of
Ardemis in the city was one of the great wonders of the ancient world. St.
Paul took Christianity to Ephesus (Acts 18:18-19). He stayed there for two
years during his third missionary journey.

FAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
This Sunday is the Paregentan of the Fast of the Assumption of the Holy
Mother of God. This is a five-day period (Monday to Friday) of fasting that
precedes the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother, which is Sunday,
August 17.
Paregentan, (literally good living) is a day of enjoyment and comes
before the beginning of a period of fasting. Poun Paregentan comes before
Great Lent. Besides Poun Paregentan there are ten Paregentans in the
liturgical calendar that come before shorter periods of fasting, usually
prior to a major Feast day.

ARMENIAN PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM
COMPUTERIZES REGISTRY RECORDS
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has taken steps to computerize
and preserve the genealogical records of community members dating back over
a century and a half, rescuing them from oblivion and the ravages of time
and weather.
The date, spread over more than 220 musty pages of three ancient
"domars" (registers) maintained by the Patriarchate’s scriptorium, was
photographed by one of Jerusalem’s leading artists, Garo Nalbandian.
Patriarchate sources revealed that the pages had become brittle and in
several cases the running ink had made the painstaking handwritten script
almost illegible.
Enshrined on computer CD-ROMs, the registers, which are primarily lists
of the details of the births, marriages and deaths of the Armenian community
of the Old City over the past 170 years, will now be permanently preserved
for posterity within the Patriarchate archives.
Armenians have been living in Jerusalem even before the advent of
Christianity-but documents or records attesting to their presence in the
Holy Land around that era are hard to come by. Even before Thaddeus and
Bartholomew, the two apostles of Jesus of Nazareth who according to
tradition brought Christianity to a heathen Armenia, a large number of the
denizens of that rocky region had already set up home in Jerusalem, the
sleepy village that had become a distant outpost of the empire carved out by
Armenian emperor Tigranes II some 150 years before the birth of Jesus.

USAID/CAPS DIRECTOR: IMPORT MAKES UP 90% OF MEDICAL MARKET IN ARMENIA

ArmInfo. Import makes up 90% of the medical market in Armenia, CAPS
(Competitive Armenia Private Sector) programme Director heyley
Alexander told ArmInfo when commenting on the results of studies
carried out by CAPS in production, sales and import of pharmaceutical
products in Armenia.

According to him, the studies have shown that not only the consumers
but also the doctors and druggists are often unaware of the Armenian
pharmaceutical enterprises and their products. ‘Some consumers,
we have questioned, found it difficult to call even one name of a
drug produced in Armenia or a pharmaceutical enterprise. Moreover,
in most cases, the doctors prescribe import drugs to the patients
even under availability of the Armenian analogues’, H. Alexander
said. Talking of the degree of representation of the Armenian
medicines in chemists shops, CAPS director said that though the
Armenian medicines are received by chemists shops, the client are
often recommended foreign-made drugs. H. Alexander also said that the
Armenian pharmaceutists should be more active in the area of marketing.

‘Everything is important here: from proper packaging to organization
of sales and advertising’, H. Alexander said.

To recall CAPS held studies in the area of pharmaceutics in April-July,
2008, the results of which currently undergo processing for the
next publication.

RA GOVERNMENT OFFERS TO INCREASE WATER DISCHARGES FROM SEVAN LAKE IN 2008 OVER TWICE

arminfo

ArmInfo. At today’s session of the government, RA Prime Minister Tigran
Sarkisyan offered the Armenian parliament to hold special session
on August 19 to get permission for increase of water discharges from
Sevan lake.

He said that an emergency situation developed because of dry weather,
that requires immediate solution. He said that in case the problem
solution fails, serious economic and social problems may occur in the
republic as numerous farms may turned out to be without irrigating
water.

Chairman of the of RA water economy State Committee Andranik
Andreasyan said at today’s press-conference that the government asks
the Parliament to allow water discharges from Sevan lake in 2008 to
360 mln cub m, though the law envisages 170 mln. A. Andreasyan also
said that sharp lack of water has been stipulated by shallowness and
unprecedented dry climate. In view of this, the irrigating season
started two months earlier and 240,000 farms may face the problem
of lack of the irrigating water. He said that he has to apply to the
Parliament for the first time with request to make changes to the law
and increase water discharges from the lake. The Committee chairman
added assured that increase of water discharges will not endanger Sevan
as the level of water in the lake raised by 45 cm since the beginning,
2008. By his estimations, change of 1 cm of water is adequate to 13
mln cub m of water.

Mortar Attack In Istanbul Targeted Military Garrison

MORTAR ATTACK IN ISTANBUL TARGETED MILITARY GARRISON

PanARMENIAN.Net
07.08.2008 18:28 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ A series of explosions ripped through central
Istanbul on Thursday but officials would not confirm reports they
were caused by mortars targeting a nearby military garrison.

Three people were slightly injured in the explosions outside a
municipal building in Istanbul on Thursday. A television report said
the blasts were caused by mortars that targeted a military garrison
near the municipal building in Uskudar, on Istanbul’s Asian side.

One blast occurred in a garbage-collecting truck in the car park of
the building, while two others ripped through a neighboring cemetery,
Uskudar mayor Mehmet Cakir said.

"Three workers were slightly injured," Istanbul police chief Celalettin
Cerrah said at the scene.

He said bomb experts were investigating the incident, but added it was
too early to conclude it was an attack against the building, raising
also the possibility that waste in the truck might have exploded.

The NTV news channel quoted police sources as saying that four
mortars were fired from the cemetery, located behind the municipal
building. The channel suggested the intended target was a military
garrison several hundred meters away. Witnesses had earlier said that
explosives were hurled from behind trees in the cemetery.

Hand grenades or small bombs designed to scare rather than kill are
thought to have been used, the CNN Turk news channel said. Two people
on a motorbike were seen fleeing the scene, it said. The explosions
shattered the windows of the building and damaged vehicles in the
car park, AFP reports.

Congressman Steve Cohen Forcibly Removed Journalist From News Confer

CONGRESSMAN STEVE COHEN FORCIBLY REMOVED JOURNALIST FROM NEWS CONFERENCE FOR HIS QUESTION ABOUT ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

PanARMENIAN.Net
07.08.2008 15:50 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) forcibly
removed Armenian American journalist Peter Musurlian from a press
conference, apparently frustrated by repeated calls to explain his
Congressional opposition to legislation recognizing the Armenian
Genocide, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) told
PanARMENIAN.Net.

"Apparently we need to send Congressman Cohen a copy of the first
amendment as well as the state penal code," stated ANCA Executive
Director Aram Hamparian. "Physically throwing out a reporter committed
to getting the facts on his opposition to genocide legislation,
is nothing more than a high school bully tactic and is conduct
ill-befitting a Member of Congress."

Musurlian, who works for a public access TV station in Burbank,
California, in addition to running his own production company,
Globalist Films, had traveled to Memphis to document the days leading
up to the contentious August 7th Democratic primary between first-term
incumbent Steve Cohen and challenger, former civil rights lawyer,
Nikki Tinker, for LA based Horizon Armenian Television.

Following a series of unanswered interview requests filed earlier
this week, Musurlian attended several Cohen public events on Tuesday
evening, documenting his campaign activities and looking for an
opportunity to speak with the Congressman. Musurlian’s efforts to
participate in a Wednesday press conference, hastily called by Cohen
at his own residence, were cut short when a volatile and clearly
agitated Cohen forcibly shoved Musurlian out the door, slamming
it in frustration. Throughout the process, Cohen made disparaging
references to Musurlian’s Armenian heritage, and proudly stated his
opposition to human rights legislation commemorating the Armenian
Genocide. That resolution, H.Res.106, has over 200 Congressional
cosponsors and was adopted by the House Foreign Affairs Committee
last October. Following Committee adoption of H.Res.106, Cohen was
a leader amongst a handful of Democratic legislators opposing full
House passage of the resolution, going so far as holding a Capitol
Hill press conference against the human rights measure.

"Genocide must be universally condemned – whenever and wherever it
occurs. Rep. Cohen’s opposition to Armenian Genocide recognition
today, begs the question: Which genocide will he oppose commemorating
tomorrow?" noted Hamparian.

STEPANAKERT: IT’S ABSURD TO REACT TO PLANS FOR "NEW" NKR CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION

PanARMENIAN.Net
07.08.2008 14:34 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ There can’t be any kind of reaction to Baku’s recent
initiative to build a "new" capital of Nagorno Karabakh, said Janna
Galstyan, chairperson of the NKR parliamentary committee on defense,
armament and security.

"Maybe, the Azeri authorities have finally come to understand that
people can’t live in tents for 20 years in a country rich in oil and
gas. Believe, the talk about construction of a new NKR capital is
too absurd to comment on," she told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

In an interview with Mirror newspaper, head of so-called Azeri
community of Karabakh Nizami Bakhmanov said that "a new settlement
is being built in Khojavend region of Azerbaijan for refugees from
Khojavend, Khojaly and Shushi."

It’s worth noting that Khojavend is a fictitious administrative unit
in the southwest of Azerbaijan.
