ORINATS YERKIR SETS UP ELECTION OFFICE

ARMENPRESS

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS: Heghine Bisharian, a deputy chairman
of the Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) party of a former parliament
chairman Arthur Baghdasarian said today she and other senior members
of the party will have weekly news conferences ‘to inform the public
at large about their plans and advertise their election agenda."

Arthur Baghdasarian won a unanimous approval of his political party
to stand for president in next year’s election during his party’s
extraordinary meeting earlier this month.

Baghdasarian received proof of his 10-year citizenship and permanent
residence in Armenia from the police’s visa and passport department
and submitted documents necessary for registration as a candidate to
the Central Election Commission.

Heghine Bisharian, who will coordinate Baghdasarian’s election
campaign, said today that the party has formed the election office and
has asked the appropriate body to allow it to start raising proceeds
for its election fund.

Mrs. Bisharian said the party has 100,000 members and will not face
financial problems. She said Arthur Baghdasarian will use the free
and paid air time to advertise his election platform.

She said the Orinats Yerkir emphasizes the presence of long-term
international observers and has sent to the OSCE Yerevan office its
written proposals.

However, under Armenian law, the right to invite international
observers to monitor Armenian elections is vested in the
country’s presidnet, the government and the Central Election
Commission. Political parties are not authorized to do it.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
