A state holiday, the Independence Day, is celebrated in Armenia on
September 21.

To recall, by resolution of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR, a
referendum was held on September 21, 1997, on withdrawal from the USSR
structure and declaration of independence. 94,99% of Armenia’s
citizens, having the voting right, responded affirmatively to this
question. Two days later, the Supreme Council declared Armenia an
independent state. Presidents and prime ministers of a number of
states, including President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Queen of
Great Britain Elizabeth the Second have already congratulated RA
President Robert Kocharyan with the state holiday.
