Finding Armenian Roots – a Way to Defame politicians
The ethnic origin and/or religious background of certain Turkish
officials are often a theme for discussion in Turkey. We don’t mean
the Donmes, the Muslim Jews, but rather Christian Armenians. What’s
the reason of this genesis digging that turn into accusation? Before
answering this question we want to remind you that the Turkish
president Ahmed Nacet Sezer was subjected to doubts concerning his
birth in Kotahia, a Christian district.
Some of suchlike suppositions appear in the press others remain only
rumors. The last victims exposed to bigoted doubts were former
Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister Mesut Ylmazin
who was said to be Armenian, the present Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul
is said to have Georgian origin. Even more, the charismatic leader of
the “Grey Wolves” political organization Alparslan Turkesh, born in
Cyprus in 1917, was blamed for having adopted anArmenian child.
The founder of today’s Turkey Kemal Ataturk was also blamed for
adopting an Armenian daughter Sabiha Giokchen who later became the
first women pilot inthe Turkish air force.
Discussions over the origin of Sabiha Giokchen made the supreme
headquarters of Turkey intervene declaring officially: “Her Armenian
origin is of no importance. Even if it’s true that shows that Ataturk
tolerated religious and ethnic minorities.”
In order to prove that Armenian roots are means of defaming certain
politicians we shall bring the example of Devlet Bahceli, president of
the Nationalistic Movement party. The Turkish Akos Daily spreads
information ongenealogy of Bahceli referring to another newspaper
Vakit.
According to the Akos Daily August 13 issue, a Turkish historian Jezmi
Yurtsevert studied Bahceli’s genealogy and published in the
newspaper. As a result of the research historian concluded that
Bahceli is a 100 percent Turk withno drop of Armenian or Christian
blood. In 2003 Yurtsevert studied the Ottoman archives and turned to
the municipality of Kozan (Armenian name for Kozan is Sis, the
birthplace of Bahceli) to find out facts about his birth certificate.
Jezmi Yurtsevert concludes with the following words: “Documents of the
Ottoman archive refute the false claims about Bahceli’s Armenian
origin. The results of the research show that he comes from Turkmen
fattahli tribe and that his forefathers in the Ottoman era were feuds
occupying the lands stretching from Urha to Marash. No doubt that it’s
a trick to put an end to the political carrier of Bahceli by using an
Armenian weapon.”

TURKS CENSOR MARCH ISSUE OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

The National Geographic popular magazine that is issued in America
included a 22 pages article entitled “Armenia Reborn” in its March
issue. This arose a wave of indignation in the Turkish circles,
Armenian Mirror Spectator weekly writes in its August 7 issue. Turkish
Government and Turkish Lobby attacked the weekly and its publishers
with letters that put under doubt the presented reality. Under this
pressure, “Armenia Reborn” article by Frank Viviano, representing the
Armenian history of 3000 years as well as the current events in
Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh conflict, was excluded from the Turkish
version of the periodical.
But, in honour of the editorship, we must estimate that the position
concerning the Armenian Genocide remained unchanged. In the July issue
of the magazine, in the “Forum” section, the editors characterized the
events of 1915 as “genocide” and stated that they received over 1600
letters on this matter, dwelling on the March issue dedicated to
Armenia. Not a single article received such evaluation during the last
five years. The magazine published the four of these letters,
including the letters by Hrair Hovnanian and Antony Parsamian, where
they state that the article reflected the true Armenian character and
the values cherished by the nation. In the course of the meeting in
Washington, Ros Vardian, Executive Director of Armenian Congress,
David Jenian, Head of Pr Department, and Ruben Adalian, Director of
“Ani” company thanked the editors of the magazine.
Besides, the article in the March issue of National Geographic, the
magazine published another large article on Armenians entitled “Proud
Armenians” in 1978.

Armenia, Russia in joint “planned” exercises

YEREVAN
Four-day joint Armenian-Russian exercises started at the Marshal
Bagramyan training centre today.
The spokesman for the Armenian Defence Ministry, Seyran Shakhsuvaryan,
told Mediamax that the exercises are of planned character. Their aim
is to work out the sides’ interoperability while carrying out
defensive actions.
Reinforced motor-rifle regiment is taking part in the exercises from
the Armenian part, and servicemen of the Russian Defence Ministry’s
112th military base stationed in Armenia from the Russian
part. Fighting, attack aviation and artillery will take part in the
exercises along with the motorized forces.
The exercises are being carried out under the command of Armenian
Deputy Defence Minister, Lt-Gen Mikael Grigoryan.

Six Armenian pilots on trial in Equatorial Guinea over alleged plot

Presenter Six Armenian pilots, who are accused of plotting to
overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea, are on trial.
The Armenian leadership is sure that the Armenian pilots were not
involved in the plot. The Armenian Foreign Ministry said that the
pilots have already been appointed a local defence attorney. This is
(?Pansiano Mubombo Nubuen) who has already met the pilots and talked
to the Armenian ambassador to Egypt, Samvel Manasaryan. A spokesman
for the Armenian Foreign Ministry told “Aylur” news programme that the
attorney has promised to use all his skills to prove that the Armenian
pilots are not guilty.
Gamlet Gasparyan, spokesman for the Armenian Foreign Ministry,
captioned We have not yet any information about the trial because of
the time difference. Under the country’s laws, the local defence
attorney has been appointed. The attorney has met the pilots at the
end of last week. Our diplomats have met various officials of this
country and held talks with them to present Armenia’s position.
As you know the Armenian president Robert Kocharyan also sent a letter
to the Equatorial Guanine leadership. Armenia has taken various steps
and addressed various countries and international organizations,
asking them to assist our pilots. Armenia is doing its best in order
to solve this problem as soon as possible.

Azeri premier blames minister for debt to Turkish company

Refugees from Armenia will not pay for education in state-run
universities, Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizada has said.
He also commented on Azerbaijan’s debt to Turkey’s Saka Korkmaz
company. Rasizada said that Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Irsad
Aliyev had abused power endorsing the debt of about 9m dollars .

Armenian president to visit Poland

Warsaw, 24 August : The president of the Republic of Armenia, Robert
Kocharyan, will pay an official visit to Poland on 5-7 September, the
Presidential Chancellery reported on Tuesday 24 August .
The Armenian president, who has been invited to visit Poland by
President Aleksander Kwasniewski, will be accompanied by his wife.

A MOTHER’S LOVE FOR CHILDREN HONORED IN ARMENIA
New York Family Builds a Tribute through the Fund for Armenian Relief
As Gregory Manuelian and Christine Brewster watched the bubbling
enthusiasm among the children running through the new playground,
singing songs on the swings, and bouncing on the seesaw in Yerevan, the
two siblings witnessed a living tribute to the Armenian spirit of their
late mother, Diane Manuelian.
In memory of Diane, Charles Manuelian and family sponsored the
construction of a colorful playground and a two-tiered water fountain
for the children at the Nork Orphanage by the Fund for Armenian Relief
(FAR), a New York-based nonprofit organization with a trusted reputation
and successful 15-year track record of implementing programs in Armenia
and Karabagh. “We chose something meaningful and personal for my
mother,” said Mrs. Brewster. “The playground is tangible; it is to be
used and enjoyed by the children. She would have loved it.”
On August 4, 2004, Gregory Manuelian and Christine Brewster officially
opened the newly constructed playground at the Nork Orphanage. In the
presence of Mrs. Brewster’s two children, Elizabeth and Mark, Archbishop
Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of
America (Eastern) and President of the FAR Board of Directors, Very Rev.
Fr. Arshak Khachatryan, Chancellor of the Mother See of Holy
Etchmiadzin, Simon Balian, FAR Executive Director, Krikor Tatoulian, FAR
Country Director, and Liana Karapetian, the Nork Orphanage Director,
they cut the red ribbon delicately tied across the playground with
scissors proffered on a tray by a young boy and girl dressed in their
Sunday-best.
The opening ceremony, which presented her first opportunity to travel to
the Homeland, “was an emotional, special occasion,” revealed Mrs.
Brewster. “No matter how much one reads about Armenia and talks to
others about their experiences, nothing quite prepares you for the
essence of Armenia, its people and the beautiful countryside,” she said.
The Manuelian family has a long-standing relationship with FAR,
supporting its programs to help the people of Armenia. On this personal
occasion, they again turned to the organization to fulfill their
objective. “FAR has done a beautiful job,” said Gregory Manuelian,
“Armenia needs FAR.”
FAR is a nonprofit organization headquartered in New York, with offices
in Yerevan, Gyumri, and Stepanakert. For 15 years, FAR has implemented
various relief, development, social, educational, and cultural projects
valued at more than $250 million. It remains the preeminent Diasporan

“ARMENTEL” CONSIDERS ACCUSATION OF NON-REREGISTERED “FREE HAIK
MISSION” PARTY AS GROUNDLESS
YEREVAN, August 24 (Noyan Tapan). The trial on the claim of the
non-reregistered “Free Haik Mission” Party against the “ArmenTel”
company continued at the court of the first instance of the Kentron
and Nork Marash Communities of Yerevan on August 24.
According to the side of the claimant, it became impossible to inform
representatives of the territorial and regional structures about the
special general meeting dedicated to the issue of the re-registration
of the party by reason of the faultiness of the telephone line of the
party office during seven days. The side of the claimant demands that
“ArmenTel” “should in public apologize to the organization and all the
citizens of Armenia who suffered moral and material damage.”
Artavazd Petrosian, a representative of “ArmenTel”, considered the
claimant’s application as groundless, because the telephone number
mentioned in the application belongs not to the party, but to its
Chairman Ruben Mnatsakanian, and according to the side of the
respondent, the disconnection of the indicated telephone line doesn’t
connected in any way with the non-registration of the “Free Haik
Mission” Party.
Artavazd Petrosian also mentioned that according to the current
law, “Free Haik Mission” should have reported through mass media about
the upcoming congress a month ago. The court sitting was postponded
till September 10 because of the completion of the working day.

“ONE NATION, ONE CULTURE” FESTIVAL CONTRIBUTES TO ESTABLISHMENT OF
SAME NAME FOUNDATION
YEREVAN, August 24 (Noyan Tapan). “Armenia has little information
about the cultural groups existing in the Diaspora, and it is the best
occasion to recognize art critics and performers living in the
Diaspora.” Tamara Poghosian, Executive Director of the same name “One
Nation, One Culture” Foundation, said about it during the August 24
press conference dedicated to the “One Nation, One Culture” first
Pan-Armenian cultural festival that recently finished in Yerevan. At
the same time, she said that there was an opinion that the holding of
the festival may be considered as luxury for the country which is in a
heavy social situation. But according to her, it wouldn’t be justified
to wait while the state had the strong economy and to hold the
cultural festival at that time. According to Tamara Poghosian, every
state should present the cultural armoury of the country to the
generations, because every nation is first of all strong with its
national culture. T. Poghosian said that the holding of the festival
also contributed to the development of the same name “One Nation, One
Culture” Foundation, which was established several months ago. At the
same time, the Executive Director of the Foundation stressed that the
“Hayastan” (“Armenia”) Pan-Armenian Foundation mainly cared for the
financial expenditures of the festival. The organizers of the press
conference were also informed that from now on the festival is likely
to be held every three or four years.

FOUR ARMENIAN STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN 16TH INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIAD
ON INFORMATICS
YEREVAN, August 24 (Noyan Tapan). The 16th International Olympiad on
Informatics (IOI) will be held in Athens on September 11-18. Four
Armenian students will also participate in the Olympiad.
Representatives of 80 countries, including Russia, Italy, France,
Germany, Austria and the United States will participate in the
Olympiad this year, as in the previous years.
The Olympiad, which is held every year, is, in essence, the
competition of programming. It was first held in Bulgaria in
1989. This year the “Altec” world-famed company and the “Intel”
corporation are the sponsors of the Olympiad. It is expected that the
2005 international Olympiad will be held in Poland.
