In the “Pressing” program Satik Seyranyan the guest negotiation specialist, conflict analyst, senior consultant at CM Partners, Boston resident Artur Martirosyan is.
The main theses of the interview are below.
- Pashinyan did not get a constitutional majority, but he got a continuation of the game. If they enter the Parliament, Pashinyan will try to attract several people from the opposition to his side. That’s his hope, because if he doesn’t, the structure will collapse…
- Pashinyan realized on election night that it could be worse than what he got:
- Something strange was happening. PAP’s numbers were changing strangely, and what happened happened because if he let PAP pass, things would have been worse for him.: That’s why he didn’t leave…
- This government has been at the helm of the state for 8 years, and for some reason, they are just saying that they either stay in the line of Russianness or not. It is clear that Pashinyan received carte blanche from the West in the elections to intensify anti-Russian sentiment.
- Since 1991, Western forces wanted to push Russia out of here. it didn’t work out, but those forces did not sleep and waited for their hour, their convenient moment and achieved their goal… Russia must defend itself, and this will lead to very serious consequences, I don’t even rule out that there will be a conflict with Europe as well…
- At the moment, the governing power of the European Union, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Marta Kos and Kaia Kalas are the important decision makers for us. And when we hear that Europe, in the name of Germany, says that we must by 2030 to be ready for war against Russia, what does this mean, the opposite side should not be ready? This is a serious challenge because you never know how such an escalation phase will end.
- Europe is doing everything for their proxy, Ukraine, to succeed, and for that, Russia needs to declare itself defeated, but that cannot happen. The Russians must show that they do not want to take drastic measures, but they have to and must. By the end of the summer, the entire territory of Donetsk will be under Russian control, but Zelensky will not stop, he will continue:
- Russia is telling us: take sides, tell us clearly whether you are with us or our enemy. And here you can’t say we’re with you, but… you know, we caught some spies who were working for you… You can’t say that, it’s ridiculous. Pashinyan will try to play a two-sided game, to be with Europe and Russia. He will say one thing to one, and another to another.
- During the Pashinyan-Putin meeting, Putin addressed the Armenian people, not Pashinyan. The time for “either Europe or Russia” games is over. The resources of Pashinyan and the Armenian people to play such games are limited. If Pashinyan had sense, he would have understood that he should not have entered into the Russia-West conflict at this stage, but he saw an opportunity there. he, like Zelensky, was given carte blanche:
- It’s clear, isn’t it, that you should either be in the China-Russia-Iran triangle, or in the Turkey-Azerbaijan-West union. Pashinyan chose the triangle of the Turkey-Azerbaijan-West union. That option is an opportunity for him to stay in the game.
- For Aliyev, the Diaspora, the Armenian Church, confederates and the Armenian people are enemies, because for him all Armenians are allies.
- Pashinyan is an unprecedented partner for Azerbaijanis and Turks, the likes of which they do not have, have not had and will never have. What they want, Pashinyan does for them. And if he is a partner of such importance to you, you should help him get re-elected again. That is why they did not publish the complete list of their demands from Armenia during this time, so as not to hinder Pashinyan’s re-election. After the elections, now is the time to gradually present their demands to Armenia. Azerbaijan has never abandoned its strategic goals. And when there is a government in Armenia that scares its people with war every second, now is the moment for it to implement its fears and fulfill its promises to Azerbaijan… But it cannot, because according to the results of the National Assembly elections, it does not have a constitutional majority. It did everything to have a constitutional majority. But it will not be possible to talk about these problems over the phone, other countries may hear their conversation, the whole thing will be revealed, that’s why Hajiyev came to Armenia. In negotiation, it is called talk in the woods. The issue of Azerbaijanis coming to Armenia should be discussed in that context. claims are already being made. If this happens, Azerbaijanis will gradually get autonomy and a faction in the Parliament. Aliyev will say: if they want, let the Armenians return, knowing for sure that the Armenians will not go to Azerbaijan. Which Armenian will return to Azerbaijan, a country where their national hero is the man who beheaded Armenians while they were sleeping?: Azerbaijan, as a state, stands on the back of its citizens, says: Azerbaijanis should return, and they should have law enforcement bodies, bodies that ensure their security, not like Armenia, which does not take ownership of its citizens, some of whom are in prisons in Baku…
- Are you the prime minister or a representative of the judiciary? Isn’t there a law in this country that you say: I will crush the opposition, I will make them sit… or that the mayor says: I will flay your skins? In real parliamentary republics, such people would resign instantly. And Europe, naturally, will turn a blind eye to this, because they need this, they do what they need. The result of this will be that our people will be disillusioned with European democracy:
- Uncertainties in Iran-US relations do not end. It is not yet known what will happen after the US elections.
- If in today’s conditions there will be an Armenian state in the future, it will be a state completely dependent on Azerbaijan and Turkey, so that no Armenian generation will ever be able to return to the national goals that existed before Nikol Pashinyan’s rule. And let someone tell me that it won’t happen like that:
- There are different theories of peace, but there is no theory that only one side wants peace. both sides should want peace and both sides should take clear actions towards it. In our case, there will be a forced peace, a situation where we will be told every time: if you don’t want war, you will have to give this, that, and the other.
- One of the documents brought by Marco Rubio was the document on the minerals of Armenia. It worked. They got the minerals of Armenia themselves. The task of diplomacy of established countries is to advance their own interests. The US Secretary of State cannot sign a document that is not in their best interest.
- The Chinese have a very long memory. CP members probably don’t remember, but I will remind them that they themselves came to power, joined the anti-Chinese camp, signed some pro-Uyghur document, which did not give them anything. The Chinese did not say anything, they will not say anything, but they will remember. China has not yet congratulated Nikol Pashinyan:
International scholar Suren Sargsyan once referred to the “collapsed Armenian-Chinese relations.
1. 2019 In May, the RA Prime Minister visited China. As a result of the high-level meetings, a number of agreements were reached (including on the “Road and Belt”, but due to the inconsistency and dilettantism of the authorities, they were not implemented. The Chinese side, naturally, drew conclusions.
2. 2019 The Minister of Economy of Taiwan visited Armenia. However, we have a declaration signed with China, according to which RA is committed not to establish any official contact with Taiwan. Naturally, there were denials/clarifications/oaths, but on the Chinese side the implications were already made.
3. 2019 Armenia joined the International Alliance for Religious Freedom. A movement that is markedly anti-Chinese in nature, and the Trump administration did not hide it. The Armenian side tried to justify the “unreasonable”. No serious argument was made as to why joining that movement is in RA’s interests. The Chinese side drew its conclusions.
After all this, are you still surprised by China’s position in the UN Security Council?” he wrote.
- It would be good to have that scene in the movie “Borat-2”. How Kazakhstan awarded Pashinyan with the highest award of Kazakhstan.
- By raising a question about EAEU at the government session today, saying: “EAEU, do you exist or not?”, Pashinyan is saying this not for the domestic audience, but for Russia, but continuing the alternative game with the Russians is no longer meaningful, especially since you have no alternative. Pashinyan underestimates and does not understand the deep game between Russia and Kazakhstan.
To remind, today at the government session, Nikol Pashinyan announced. “I have questions for my colleagues regarding the statement that was accepted in my absence. We need to understand what it means in practice, can any EAEU country make such decisions in relation to any country, will they wake up one day and make decisions? According to my assessment, if the answer to this question is “yes”, then the EAEU announces its self-dissolution, and we should draw conclusions from this,” he noted.
- I, as a citizen, have a question for Ararat Mirzoyan: can you tell me with concrete numbers, which countries and how much you sent our products to?:
- Zelensky went to Azerbaijan, specially chose Gabala, from where the Russians were expelled, but he did not make anti-Russian statements there. He did it from Armenia.
To remind, during the plenary session of the European Political Community in Yerevan, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky made statements regarding Armenia’s strategic ally Russia and V. addressed to Putin and made threats.
“This summer is going to be the moment that Putin has to decide what to do: expand the war or switch to diplomacy, we have to push him to diplomacy. Russia will hold a parade with military equipment on May 9. If this happens, it will be the first time that they will not be able to show their military equipment, fear-mongering UAVs will buzz over Red Square. This shows that they are not strong, we should continue our sanctions against them,” he said.
Zelensky called on the international community from Armenia to continue the political and economic pressure on Russia.
Naturally, Russia reacted very harshly to these statements, which were made from Armenia itself.
- If the opposition united before these elections, 60% of the undecided voters would decide in their favor and go to the elections. If you, as a party, collect 2-3.5% of votes in all polls, then you should have done what the RPA did and did the right thing, saying: we are not participating, but we support the opposition in every way. It was important not to lose the sound of the ethos. Uniting as a collective opposition, it was necessary to announce that I am the majority and going to the Parliament, I will not announce any other plans at this moment, but I am going to change this government, to stop this disaster. Victory consists of small things.
- From a moral point of view, it is definitely correct not to take the mandates, but politics is not only morality. We cannot afford a moral victory, as in the case of Avarair, because not taking the mandates is a defeat on the ground.: But taking the mandates, you must clearly tell your electorate what you will do, what will be your goal, your plan.
- Nikol Pashinyan will not go to new elections, he will do everything so that the Constitutional Court will make the decision he needs. After seeing the results of the elections, Pashinyan understood that nothing can be achieved by arresting the leaders, the will of the people must be broken through a new wave of repressions, so that the Armenian people no longer have any chance of resistance, cannot stand up again.
- He himself calls on the opposition to make a revolution, otherwise, if anyone else had made such statements, he would have ended up in prison.
Details in the video.

RFE/RL – Armenian Archbishop Has Jail Sentence Overturned
- Naira Bulghadarian
An Armenian appeals court overturned on Thursday a prison sentence for an outspoken archbishop who was arrested one year ago amid Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s controversial campaign to oust Catholicos Garegin II.
Gyumri-based Archbishop Mikael Ajapahian was taken into custody the day after Pashinian threatened to forcibly remove the supreme head of the Armenian Apostolic Church from his Echmiadzin headquarters. He was charged with calling for a violent overthrow of the Armenian government.
Ajapahian, who heads the church diocese in Armenia’s Shirak province, rejected the accusation as politically motivated during his unusually quick trial which ended in October in a two-year prison sentence. He appealed against the verdict handed down by a Yerevan court of first instance. Prosecutors also filed an appeal, demanding a slightly longer sentence for the vocal critic of Pashinian.
The Court of Appeals overturned the verdict, freed Ajapahian from house arrest but stopped short of formally acquitting him. It backed defense lawyers’ claims that under Armenian law he should have been tried by a court in Gyumri. He will therefore stand a new trial there.
The 63-year-old cleric, who was moved to house arrest in February, described the latest ruling as “insufficient,” saying that he should have been cleared of the “fabricated” charges altogether. But one of his lawyers, Ara Zohrabian, described it as “courageous.”
The case against Ajapahian is based on a June 2025 interview in which he lamented the Armenian military’s failure to topple Pashinian and thus “save” Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh following the 2020 war with Azerbaijan. The Office of the Prosecutor-General had concluded that similar remarks made by him in previous years do not warrant criminal charges.
Security forces met with fierce resistance from hundreds of angry priests and laymen when they raided the church’s Mother See in Echmiadzin on June 27, 2025 in a failed attempt to demonstratively detain Ajapahian there. The latter surrendered to investigators several hours after the unprecedented raid.
Two days earlier, they arrested Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian and his 15 supporters on charges of plotting “terrorist acts” in a bid to seize power. As Pashinian stepped up pressure on Garegin, two other bishops were arrested in October and December on separate charges which they too rejected as politically motivated. They were placed under house arrest early this year.
Around the same time, a law-enforcement agency indicted six other bishops and Garegin himself but refrained from arresting them. The Catholicos made clear on June 2 that he will not resign even if he is arrested after the June 7 parliamentary elections.

Armenia’s Ruling Party Picks New Parliament Speaker
- Shoghik Galstian
The ruling Civil Contract party on Thursday designated one of its senior members, Ruben Rubinian, as the speaker of Armenia’s new parliament elected in the disputed June 7 elections.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian announced the decision after a meeting of the party’s governing board chaired by him.
“As a result of a discussion and a secret ballot, Ruben Rubinian was elected as our candidate for the speaker of the National Assembly,” he told journalists.
“I am flattered by the vote result and the [party’s] trust is very binding for me,” Rubinian said for his part.
The speaker of the outgoing parliament, Alen Simonian, hoped to retain his post after the elections. Rubinian challenged him for the job along with Civil Contract’s parliamentary leader, Hayk Konjorian. Pashinian did not say whether he initiated or backed the choice of the new speaker.
A longtime Pashinian ally, Simonian was dogged by controversy throughout his five-year tenure. In particular, he infamously ordered his bodyguards to catch and overpower a heckler in Yerevan before spitting at the man’s face in 2023. A year later, Simonian publicly insulted a Nagorno-Karabakh activist who berated him and other top state officials during an official ceremony.
Last November, Simonian branded two pro-opposition podcaster as “sons of a b*tch” when he commented on their seven-hour interview with former President Serzh Sarkisian broadcast live on YouTube. The podcasters responded to him with offensive language before being arrested on hooliganism charges.
In addition to being one of Simonian’s two deputies since 2021, Rubinian has also represented Armenia in normalization talks with neighboring Turkey. Like Simonian, he has repeatedly attacked and insulted opposition lawmakers on the parliament floor. The 36-year-old declared in February that the Armenian authorities will not allow the opposition to win the forthcoming elections.
The main opposition groups have rejected as fraudulent the official election results giving victory to Pashinian’s party. Only two of them won seats in the new parliament, according to those results. They have yet to decide whether to take up their seats.

Pashinian Hits Out At Russian-Led Bloc
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian reacted scathingly on Thursday to Russia’s and other ex-Soviet states’ recent calls for Armenia to decide whether to remain part of their Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) or continue seeking membership of the European Union.
Following two European summits hosted by the Armenian government in early May, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Yerevan should make such a choice “as soon as possible.” The leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan backed this stance during an EEU summit on May 29 boycotted by Pashinian.
In a joint statement with Putin, they called for an Armenian referendum on the issue. They also implicitly warned of a possible suspension of Armenia’s membership in the Russian-led bloc vital for the Armenian economy.
Pashinian rejected the call on June 1. He went farther on Thursday, questioning the EEU’s continued existence.
“I also have questions for our colleagues regarding the statement they made in my absence, and we need to understand what that means in practice,” he told a cabinet meeting in Yerevan. “In other words, we need to understand whether any country in the Eurasian Economic Union can make such decisions regarding any other country and just wake up one day and make such decisions? In my opinion, if the answer to this question is ‘yes,’ then the Eurasian Economic Union is declaring its self-dissolution, and we should draw conclusions from this.”
“Now the Eurasian Economic Union must say whether it exists or not,” he said.
Pashinian stressed earlier that Armenia cannot be kicked out of the EEU without its consent. His critics countered that even if Yerevan vetoes its exit, Russia will still be in a position to impose crippling economic sanctions on the South Caucasus country.
Citing sanitary grounds, Moscow effectively banned multimillion-dollar imports of Armenian agricultural products and beverages in the run-up to the country’s June 7 parliamentary elections. Putin warned of more economic measures against Yerevan on May 29.
As well as lambasting the EEU, Pashinian said that his government will continue to “work very closely and actively” with the bloc. He reiterated that he will attend a meeting of the prime ministers of EU member states expected in August.
Pashinian assured voters ahead of the elections that Russia will swiftly lift the sanctions if he wins another term in office. However, Moscow has shown no signs of easing the economic pressure on Yerevan since the official election results gave victory to the ruling party. Senior Russian officials have said that the vote was marred by numerous irregularities. Putin has still not congratulated Pashinian.

RFE/RL – Pashinian Blames Armenian Opposition, Diaspora For Azeri Demands
- Astghik Bedevian
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Thursday blamed Armenian opposition and Diaspora groups for Azerbaijan’s renewed demands for Armenia to allow a mass influx of Azerbaijanis who had lived there in Soviet times.
Pashinian claimed that Azerbaijani leaders continue to refer to much of Armenian territory as “Western Azerbaijan” in response to efforts to champion the rights of Nagorno-Karabakh’s ethnic Armenian population displaced during Baku’s recapture of the region in September 2023.
Earlier this week, the Azerbaijani government organized near the Armenian border a “festival-conference” on Azerbaijanis’ “return to Western Azerbaijan.” Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Education Minister Emin Amrulayev said the issue is of “strategic importance” to Baku.
An Azerbaijani lawmaker heading a government-linked group called the Community of Western Azerbaijan said afterwards that it must be on the agenda of Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations. Another Azerbaijani group reportedly organized on Wednesday an international conference on the subject on Capital Hill in Washington.
The Armenian government has pointedly declined to react to those developments. Armenian opposition leaders have seized upon them, saying that they were right to warn voters ahead of the June 7 parliamentary elections that Pashinian will allow as many as 300,000 Azerbaijanis to settle in Armenia if he wins reelection. The Armenian premier hit back at those claims.
“There is silence about the fact that just ten or a little more days ago, Armenian organizations [in the United States] brought up an issue that essentially concerns … the continuation of the Karabakh movement,” he told reporters.
Pashinian appeared to refer to the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), a lobbying group linked to the pan-Armenian Dashnaktsutyun party, which is in opposition to him. The ANCA reported last week that five pro-Armenian U.S. congressmen have put forward legislation demanding that Baku allow the Karabakh Armenians’ safe return to their homeland, release Armenian prisoners and withdraw from Armenian border areas seized by Azerbaijani forces in 2021 and 2022.
“These amendments send a clear message: Congress will not subsidize Azerbaijan’s abuses, aggression, desecration, and occupation with U.S. tax dollars,” said aid ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.
“I’m saying it very bluntly: as long as the Dashnaktsutyun lobbying and steps in that direction continue in the United States, they will receive [a pushback from Baku] … Now any attempt to continue the Karabakh movement at other levels will bring mirror reactions,” said Pashinian.
“Moreover, that process can cause us problems,” he added without elaborating.
Pashinian also linked the Azerbaijani demands to the Armenian opposition’s advocacy of the Karabakh Armenians’ right to repatriation. He has repeatedly said that the more than 100,000 refugees should stop hoping to return to Karabakh and should “settle down” in Armenia instead.
Opposition leaders argue that “Western Azerbaijan” never existed as an entity, whereas Karabakh was for decades at the center of peace talks mediated by the United States, Russia and France. They have for years said that Pashinian’s unilateral concessions only encourage Baku to make more demands on Yerevan.

Armenpress: ‘I don’t think it was us’: Trump on Iran school strike
U.S. President Donald Trump has said it may never be known who was at fault for a deadly strike on a girls’ school in Iran on February 28, the first day of the Iran war, that killed scores of children, Reuters reported.
Reuters first reported in March that an initial internal U.S. military investigation showed U.S. forces were likely responsible for the fatal strike in Minab in southern Iran. The Pentagon has since elevated the probe but it has not acknowledged any preliminary findings.
“I don’t know that they are ever going to solve that problem,” Reuters quoted Trump as saying at an Oval Office briefing alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“I don’t know that they are ever going to solve that problem in terms of whose fault was it because there were missiles flying all over the place, and it’s horrible what happened but there were missiles flying all over the place,” he said.
“Somebody said it was our missile, maybe it wasn’t our missile but I have seen nothing to lead me to believe it was,” Trump remarked, adding: “I don’t think it was us.”
The strike on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, killed more than 175 children and teachers, according to Iranian officials.
The strike may be the result of U.S. use of outdated targeting data, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in March.
Deliberately attacking a school would likely be a war crime under international humanitarian law. U.S. officials have publicly said Washington would not deliberately target a school.
The strike caused global outrage. The U.N. human rights office called it “absolutely horrific.”
Trump initially claimed, without evidence, Iran was responsible. He has since said he does not know enough about the strike, that an investigation is ongoing, that he will accept the results of the inquiry and that “nobody” purposefully attacked the school.

US says review underway to see how Türkiye can get F-35 fighter jets
U.S. Vice President JD Vance indicated that a review was underway to see how the United States could sell Türkiye F-35 fighter jets given Ankara’s 2019 acquisition of Russian S-400 missile defense systems, Reuters reported.
“Pete [Hegseth] and the entire team are reviewing this right now, because there are certain things that we have to certify have happened … in order to comply with American law. The president has asked us to do that,” Vance told reporters.
President Donald Trump’s administration is planning to push ahead with the sale of dozens of jet engines to Türkiye worth hundreds of millions of dollars ahead of a NATO summit there next month, despite objections from some members of the U.S. Congress, Reuters reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
The engines, produced by General Electric, will power Türkiye’s first indigenous combat jet KAAN, a major project launched in 2016 as part of NATO member Ankara’s efforts to be more self-sufficient in its defense. One of the sources said the package will be worth more than $700 million.
Asked on Wednesday about the jet engines, the F-35 program, and his plans for the summit in Ankara, Trump said: “I’m going to probably do something that will make them very happy.”
Trump also said he will attend the NATO summit in Ankara ‘out of respect’ for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Asked whether he was going to Türkiye “with a big gift bag,” Trump pointed to Türkiye’s NATO membership.
“Look, he’s a member of NATO. Some people don’t consider himself (a NATO member), but he really is. He’s a strong member of NATO,” Trump said during his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House.

No final agreements on Ukraine reached between Russia and U.S. in Alaska, Rubi
No final agreements on Ukraine were reached during the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said while speaking to reporters in Bahrain.
“There were proposals in Alaska, but there were no agreements in Alaska. If there had been an agreement, the war would already be over,” Interfax quoted Rubio as saying.
Rubio stressed that the United States remains ready to play any constructive role in helping bring the war in Ukraine to an end. He expressed confidence that Washington “must play a role in bringing the sides closer together” and in helping resolve the crisis.
Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that during the Russian-American summit in Alaska, the sides had reached an understanding on how to stop military operations in Ukraine and move on to negotiations.
“And now they tell us: listen, for now it is not working out, so let us make some more concessions. We did not concede anything there. We simply agreed on how to stop the military operations and proceed to resolving all remaining issues at the negotiating table,” Lavrov said.

EU Council approves EU-U.S. trade agreement
The Council of the European Union has approved the tariff commitments under the EU-U.S. trade agreement, the Council’s press service said.
Brussels said that, in line with the commitments set out in the EU-U.S. Joint Statement of August 21, 2025, it had formally adopted two regulations.
“The adoption of these regulations completes the legislative process and reaffirms the EU’s commitment to stable, predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic trade relations, while preserving the necessary safeguards to protect European economic interests,” the Council said in a statement.
The approved regulations eliminate the remaining EU customs duties on industrial goods imported from the United States, introduce preferential access for certain categories of seafood and agricultural products from the United States, and extend the suspension of customs duties on imports of lobsters.
At the same time, the regulations establish a mechanism allowing the European Commission to respond rapidly in the event of a significant increase in imports that causes, or threatens to cause, serious harm to EU operators.
In addition, the regulations provide for the suspension of tariff preferences if the United States fails to fulfil its commitments, undermines the objectives of the joint statement or disrupts balanced trade relations, including through discriminatory measures.

European Trade Union Institute warns heat stress threatens 130 million workers
Europe is experiencing record temperatures, and extreme heat is posing a threat to people’s health both at home and in the workplace, according to a report by the European Trade Union Institute.
As reported by Euronews, the institute, the research and training centre of the European Trade Union Confederation, included recommendations in the report aimed at protecting workers’ health in the context of climate change.
One of the report’s authors stressed that the risk is not confined to southern Europe.
“Of course, the situation is worst in the south because that is where the highest number of incidents is recorded. At the same time, however, the sharpest increase in such incidents is being observed in Central and Northern Europe. The south is already hot, but the centre and the north are rapidly reaching the same level,” said Andreas Flouris, Professor of Physiology at the University of Thessaly.
According to the report, around 130 million workers across Europe are exposed to heat stress in the workplace, resulting in approximately 277,000 occupational injuries and 230 deaths each year.
