‘AERATZIA’ WILL FILTER 300 THOUSAND CUBIC METER OF SEWAGE DAILY

As it is known, the World Bank has already confirmed its second
credit program of Yerevan’s water supply, and now “Aeratzia” station
for cleaning the town’s sewage will be renovated. The Swede SWECO
organization that won the contest to repair the station presented
yesterday its research in the strategy of sewage cleaning.

Bernt Noren, representative of the organization, said that they suggest
replacing the equipment of the 40 years old station with new equipment
matching European standards. The Swede suggest to do a mechanical
cleaning in the first phase of reconstruction. Already the first
phase will bring considerable relief to the ecology. Thanks to $25-30
million in this phase “Aeratzia”, which serves 1.3 million people,
will be able to filter 300 thousand cubic meter of sewage daily.

The second phase — biological cleaning phase — will be more expensive
and will take more time. The total sum for the two phases will reach
$70 million. Bernt Noren noted that the construction or reconstruction
of such stations may last for years.

Besides the good news of the station’s reconstruction, the Swede
expert had an unpleasant news as well. He said that the tariff for
water will raise for 25 AMD after “Aeratzia” will get functioning.

SERGE SARGSIAN: IN 2005 WE ARE READY TO PAY FOR ARMAMENTS NO LESS THAN AZERBAIJAN DOES

Pan Armenian Network

08.04.2005 05:33

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In 2005 we are ready to pay for armaments no less
than Azerbaijan does. We have heard of Azerbaijan’s intentions to
solve its problems with a grand military budget for already 10
years and will probably hear within the next 10 years as well”,
Armenian Defense Minister Serge Sargsian stated during today’s
meeting with Armenian writers held in one of the military unit
dislocated in the town of Armavir. The armament and efficiency of
the army are inseparable and are capital-intensive, he noted and
added that modernization of the armament, what demand less expenses,
is under way presently. When commenting on the mutual concessions
to be possibly made by Armenia and Azerbaijan, Serge Sargsian noted,
“Some speak of inadmissibility of concessions but we should determine
our position and decide where to lead our people and whether we want
a new or eternal war.” Eternal war is a variant, he said and added
that if the Armenian people chooses such position he will support
them. “I am not obliged to listen one or two persons who have the
right to express their opinion but are blear-eyed”, he stated. At
that Serge Sargsian noted that he does hold the opinion that the
statements on compromises are statements of defeatism.

STUDENTS ESTIMATE PROFESSORS

Arrangement at Journalism Department

The students of the Department of Journalism at State University were
estimating their won professors in a unique way yesterday. Contrary
to other usual cases, this time the contest was organized for
professors. The students were choosing among the teaching staff the
smileiest, the most feast-lover, law-abiding, punctual, honest and
meanwhile asked nominees recommendations.

Future journalists are seldom asked to name the important event of
the week. The students decided to find out the most correct answer
from dean of the Department, Garnik Ananyants. “Certainly this event”,
said the dean apparently satisfied with the students’ idea.

ARMENIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY DOES NOT POSSESS INFORMATION ON LOCATION OF
ARMENIAN SOLDIER MISSING FROM MILITARY UNIT SINCE APRIL 1

08.04.2005 04:21

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Armenian Ministry of Defense does not possess
precise information on the whereabouts of the Armenian solder missing
from the military unit in Noemberyan region of Armenia since April 1,
Deputy Defense Minister. Lieutenant General Mikael Grigorian told
journalists today. In his words, the soldier is being looked for
at the moment. At the same time he did not rule out that Zohrab
Tamoian born in 1985, who left the unit without permission is in
Azerbaijan. Mikael Grigorian noted that he had a talk with deputy
head of the Azeri state commission for issue of POWs and missing,
who promised to receive information on the location of the Armenian
soldier within shortest terms. To note, the Azeri party is denying
capturing the Armenian soldier. When touching upon the Armenian
POWs in Azerbaijan Mikael Grigorian did not mention precise figure
but said that there are soldiers kept by the Azeri party from the
times of the Karabakh war. He reminded that during the meeting of
the representatives of the Armenian and Azeri State Commissions on
the issues of prisoners of war held in Tbilisi March 18 the parties
came to an agreement due to which the Armenian party has the right to
visit the places where the Armenian POWs might be kept. When touching
upon the three Azeri captives Mikael Grigorian noted that they are
in Stepanakert and will be released soon after the investigation is
over. To remind, three Azeri soldiers were captured by the servicemen
of the Karabakh defense army when crossing the border.

Europe Mourns The Pope Who Helped Reunite A Continent

EUROPE MOURNS THE POPE WHO HELPED REUNITE A CONTINENT

Agence France Press
Friday, 8 April 2005

ZAGREB, April 8 (AFP) – Europeans Friday took time out to remember
Pope John Paul II, credited with setting in motion a chain of events
which led to the collapse of communism and the reunification of a
continent torn apart by war.

Around Europe, almost a year since 10 mostly communist countries
joined the European Union swelling the EU family to 25 nations,
people were remembering the role played by the pope in modern post-war
European history.

In Zagreb, the flag was flying at half-mast above the city’s imposing
cathedral, where dozens of candles were lit inside in remembrance of
the pontiff.

“When I learnt of his death, I felt as if I had lost someone very
close,” said businessman Miljenko Berislavic, watching the pope’s
funeral in Rome on a television screen in one of the city’s cafes.

Croatians, like many peoples in the region, felt overwhelming gratitude
towards Pope John Paul II, for his support as it struggled for its
independence from Yugoslavia in the bloody 1991-95 conflict.

Pope John Paul II, who was born in Poland, was the first eastern
European to be appointed at the head of the Roman Catholic church.

He was never to forget his roots, and during his first visit to Poland
in 1979 just after being appointed, he appeared before the crowds
and said: “May the spirit come down and renew the face of this land.”

His words were interpreted by many as an exhortation to stand up to
the oppressive communist regime.

The fledgling Solidarity union movement took strength from the pope’s
words, and a decade later the Berlin Wall fell, leading to the collapse
of the Soviet Union and its grip on eastern Europe.

In mostly Orthodox Ukraine, churches in the Catholic west of the
country were packed to mark the funeral of the man revered for leading
a revival of Catholicism after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

“This day is the hardest in my life,” Ganna Kovalets, a 76-year-old
Greco Catholic worshipper said at one of the churches, with tears in
her eyes. “There is an emptiness in my soul.”

In Russia hundreds were watching the funeral in silence on a giant
screen in the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the centre
of Moscow.

Some were crying, others had their heads bent in prayer, in front of
a large photo of John Paul II, after Russian television refused to
broadcast the ceremony live.

“The pope for me was a moral voice and it is a great misfortune and
injustice that he could not come to Russia,” said museum employee
Yevgenia.

The Russian Orthodox church had refused to allow the pope to visit
the country, judging the time was not right.

In France, thousands of people applauded outside the Notre Dame
cathedral when the pope’s coffin was shown on giant screens inside
and outside the church being borne aloft in Rome.

A few hundred people also gathered at the Sacre Coeur which towers
above the French capital. There were similar gatherings across France,
and in churches in parts of Germany, particularly the Catholic
strongholds in the south.

Despite reluctance from the Serbian authorities, the funeral was
broadcast live in Belgrade as it was in Bulgaria.

Church bells also tolled across the Czech Republic at midday, with
flags on public buildings, including the building of the Czech Senate,
flying at half-mast as the country, like Hungary, observed a day of
national mourning.

Meanwhile, gypsies in Romania announced they were postponing for a day
an international festival as a mark of respect for the late pontiff.

“John Paul II worked a lot for multi-cultural respect. For us his
26-year pontificate was historic. The Roma people of all religions
in Romania loved him a lot,” said Roma leader Aven Amentza.

In largely Roman Catholic countries, such as Spain and Portugal,
bells tolled and special masses were held, although most people
appeared to have chosen to watch the pope’s funeral in their own homes.

In Lisbon, a giant television screen was set up outside a Roman
Catholic church in the heart of the Portuguese capital, and the
small crowd stood in silence or quietly prayed as they listened to
the proceedings.

And in a small orphanage in northern Armenia built with the pope’s
help after the 1988 earthquake, the pope’s death was being felt as
a very personal loss.

“We prayed for the peace of the pope’s soul. It is a great loss for
all the Catholics in the whole world. He was an exceptional spiritual
leader with his humanism and courage,” said Sister Aruciak.

In Brussels, the heart of the European Union, the bells tolled and
all the flags on the European institutions were flying at half-mast.

But in the Netherlands and Britain, ceremonies were more low-key with
only a few hundred people turning out for special masses.

Destruction Of Old Yerevan Goes On

DESTRUCTION OF OLD YEREVAN GOES ON

AZG Armenian Daily #063, 09/04/2005

Home

The buildings 9 and 11 in Byuzand Street are included in the list of
the historical-cultural monuments. These days, the deconstruction works
are at full swing in there. By the order of the owner of the building,
the workers are ruining the old-fashioned balconies of the building
from the yard’s side. Daily Azg informed Artiom Grigorian, head of RA
Agency for Historical-Cultural Monuments’ Preservation, about this. He
promised to let know a relevant department of the Yerevan Municipality.

The dwellers of the yard that found themselves in dust and rubbish
were extremely irritated and angry at the ignoring attitude
displayed to them. The workers were transferring the logs of the
ruined balconies in front of our eyes. A representative of Glendale
Hills ltd. introduced himself as the owner and rather cynically said:
“Many people just like you came, watched and went away but they didn’t
managed anything. If you come the day after tomorrow you will find this
building totally ruined. Nothing will be left here, we are going to
destroy everything.” I told him to show the permission to destroy,
he answered that it isn’t with him. The ignorant “boss” who was
destroying a historical-cultural monument and was fancying himself
“an owner” had no idea of the building’s value.

“Many films have been shot here. Famous Armenian and foreign directors
and actors worked here. “Sweet Mother,” “Serob’s Tree” and “My Dear
Yerevan” as well as many other films were shot here. I can’t remember
all of them,” Mrs. Emma, a dweller of one of the apartments of 9
Byuzand Str said.

KARS -AKHALQALAK-BAKU RAILWAY ESTIMATED $400 MILLION

AZG Armenian Daily #063, 09/04/2005

Region

Georgian Civil online newspaper informed that in Baku Georgia,
Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a treaty on construction of
Kars-Akhalqalak-Tbilisi-Baku Railway. The newspaper said that
a Georgian-Azeri-Turkish united company will be established in
Istanbul. It will carry out the construction of the railway. According
to preliminary indicators, the program will cost $400 million.

Kars-Akhalqalak newly built section of the railway stretches for 98kms,
30kms pass through Armenian-populated Javakhk. Though there used to
work Akhalqalak-Tbilisi railway it still needs to be renovated.

It’s worth reminding that there is a railway connecting Turkey with
Azerbaijan (Kars-Gyumri-Tbilisi-Baku). It doesn’t function since 1993
when the Turkish government decided to impose a blockade on Armenia.

PUTIN RECEIVES LEADERS OF ABKHAZIA AND SOUTH OSSETIA IN SOCHI

AZG Armenian Daily #063, 09/04/2005

The Russian mass media informed that Russian President Vladimir Putin
had “an absolutely closed, i.e. secret” meeting with the leaders of
Abkhazia and south Ossetia in his Sochi residence. Putin met with
Sergey Baghapish and Eduard Kokoyti after having met with Javier
Solana, Coordinator of EU Foreign Policy and Security.

Georgian President refused Moscow’s offer to meet with Baghapish
and Kokoyti despite the mediation of Putin. The Georgian mass media
informed that Mikheil Saakashvili stated that he “is never going to
meet with Kokoyti and Baghapish in Sochi.” “If they want to meet me,
all right. I can give them the telephone numbers of my home and office
in Tbilisi. They may visit me,” he said.
