SOURENYAN SPOKE, BAZEYAN DID NOT

Today the 4th session of the Republican Party took place, in which al the
parties of the opposition were invited. Tigran Karapetyan, Marxist David
Hakobyan, Ararat Zourabyan and all the parties of the Justice bloc with
Stepan Demirchyan were present.

Aramazd Zaqaryan noted that a change of authorities should have occurred
three times – after October 27, on February 20, 2003, and on April 12, 2004.
«And in all the case the fault is ours when we think how to oppose each
other».

And Sourenyants criticized Russia in his speech announcing that no change of
authorities occurred because the opposition did not understand the role of
the RF. He noted that no one can deny the Karabakh conflict or the Armenian
Genocide but the solution must be looked for no in opposing each other but
in the dialogues. Souren Sourenyants repeated hi opinion about the necessity
of Armenian to joint the NATO and the EU.

Those preset expected Albert Bazeyan to make a speech, but he did not.
Neither did he want to answer the questions of the journalists.

At present the elections of the party political council and the council
president are in progress.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DID NOT SPLIT UP

The session of the Republican Party of Armenia finished. It finished with
the adoption of a resolution in which it is said, «The Republican Party
thinks that the Armenian turnover to true democracy will mean a democratic
revolution. Democratic Revolution means to eliminate the present
authorities, to form legal authorities by free and transparent elections and
to realize structural changes towards democratization».

BY the way, it is also mentioned in the resolution that Democratic
Revolution also means Armenian orientation towards the Western civilization,
and full integration of Armenia into the civilized world.

At the end of the session the elections of the party political council and
President took place. Not splitting took place as it was anticipated: both
Albert Bazeyan and Souren Sourentyants and Vagharshak Haroutyunyan remained
within the council. The political council remained unchanged with the
exception of Romik Mkhitaryan replacing Ghoukas Ulikhanyan. The former is
being haunted by the authorities and this was the best way to be protected.
And the President of the party was elected Aram Sargsyan, son of Zaven,
whose candidacy was offered by the ex-president Albert Bazeyan.

`ITALIAN’ TREES IN ARMENIA

The quantity of the threes growing in Armenia increased today. The Italian
Ambassador to Armenia, Marco Clemente planted a ceremonial tree in Malatsia
Sebastia Community. The place was decided proceeding from the fact that the
`Italian-Armenian Meeting Point Park’ was created in this community. The
planting will symbolize the friendly and warm relation between Armenia and
Italy.

By the way, the Italian Embassy in Armenia and ATP have organized and
carried out similar joint tree plantings in 2001, 2002 and 2004. This
activity resulted in the establishment of the first unprecedented `Italian
Armenian Meeting Point Park’. Since 2001 four tree plantings have taken
place in this area. More than 200 fruit and decorative trees have survived
due to the high 90% survival rate ATP achieves today.

The park was inaugurated on December 1 of 2004. And already in 2005 the
grounds are fulfilled with more than 40 indigenous tree-species and
blossoming shrubs, which were transported directly form the ATP nurseries to

Armenian Converts In Turkey Bravely Avow Their Nationality

AZG Armenian Daily #068, 16/04/2005

ARMENIAN CONVERTS IN TURKEY BRAVELY AVOW THEIR NATIONALITY

The oppressed minorities of Turkey, most of whom evaded genocides by passing
into Islam, are getting bolder in their speeches and activities as the
country bids for the EU. The Greeks of Pontos, Assyrians, Arabs and
especially Armenians of Hamshen, Mush, Sassoon, Vardo, Zakho and other
regions who were “turned into” Kurds and Muslims are living days of
wakening. The latter sent a delegation to take part in the rally of European
Armenians in front of the European Parliament last September. Afterwards,
excited by the ongoing pressures on Turkey to recognize the Armenian
Genocide, the Armenian converts give interviews to French, German, Belgian,
Turkish and Armenian newspapers.

We called the “mother” of “Kurdized” Armenians and Hamshen Armenians in
Germany historian and political scientist Alis (Aliye) Alt to get
information on these issues. He said from his Frankfurt apartment which is
in effect is a castle for preserving the Armenianhood: “We always follow
your articles on Hamshen Armenians and Armenian converts. Thanks to the
influence of these articles that are often posted on the Internet, hundreds
of lost Hamshen Armenians who feared to reveal their identity in past get in
touch with us now. Certainly, the important reforms that took place in
Turkey under the EU’s pressure and… the threat that a Kurdish state will
emerge forced Turkey’s state circles to be a little more democratic with the
free press and mass media. We call on the Armenians of Armenia and Diaspora
to provide care for their brothers and sisters who were forcefully converted
and who number 1.5 million in Turkey. Time is ripe for a conference to
assemble all Armenians who are willing to get out of forced isolation,
reveal their identity and tell about their 90 years long persecutions in
European institutions. This is to be an all-Armenian initiative with
contribution from all organizations”, the author of “Hamshen Armenians in
the Mirror of History” tells.

Simon Geonden is from Karmir Khach village of Mush who currently lives in
Wiesenbaden. He lived the greatest half of his life as a converted “Kurd”
but returned to his roots due to the Kurdish national awakening. Emigrating
to Germany as a student, he got in touch with national minorities from
Turkey, including Armenian Genocide survivors.

“We are hopeful that the European Armenians will be more kind to us. Some
people have morbid understanding of the converts and want to see everything
settled in a few days. Time will solve all our issues and will heal our deep
wounds”, Simon Geonden said.

Turk Laws Don’t Allow Armenian Church to Return ‘Seized Properties’

AZG Armenian Daily #068, 16/04/2005

Turkey

‘TURKISH LAWS DO NOT ALLOW THE ARMENIAN CHURCH TO RETURN ‘ITS SEIZED
PROPERTIES”

Christopher Smith, co-chair of the US Helsinki Committee, announced that the
current legislation of Turkey doesn’t allow the Armenian Church to return
its properties “unjustly seized by the state.”

Mediamax agency informed that Mr. Smith said this during his speech at the
US Helsinki Committee hearing on the religious freedom in Turkey.

“The Armenian Church has lost the great part of its property as a result of
the laws that allow the government to directly manage the property when the
number of the local community doesn’t amount to a definite number. On its
turn, the Istanbul Armenian Patriarchate keeps working on the
acknowledgement of its legal status. Last September, Turkey adopted new
rules for measuring the religious communities that allow the communities
that have legal status purchase new properties. But the loss of the
properties made great harm to the Armenian Church, while the legislation of
the country doesn’t allow to demand back the properties illegally seized by
the state,” Christopher Smith said.

The US Helsinki Committee is an independent agency that carries out the
monitoring of the implementation of the commitments undertaken by 55 OSCE
member countries.

AZERI FM ON KARABAKH CONFLICT: KALASHNIKOV GUN DOES NOT HELP TO SOLVE
PROBLEMS, IT AGGRAVATES THEM

15.04.2005 04:21

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ `I hope that we have a chance to achieve progress in the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, because the Prague process has
justified itself’, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov told
Russian journalists. `The agreements we have already achieved allowed the
co-ordination of the negotiation format. That is why we expect Russia – our
friend, partner and co-chair in the settlement process along with the US and
France – to intensify its efforts for the conflict settlement. Today it
becomes clear that if we look back to the past it will be difficult to think
of the future. I suppose it is comprehended in Moscow, Baku and I hope in
Yerevan as well’, the Minister said. `The modern world has changed but we as
if continue perceiving it from the standpoint of Yalta of 1945. Now the
challenges to the international community are quite different. States, the
members of the international community should take into account the idea of
integration and the new code of interaction in the international
relationships. The Kalashnikov gun cannot help to solve problems; it only
aggravates them. The method of drawing the state borders with a red pencil
has remained in the past’, Elmar Mamedyarov added.
