THE CATHOLCIOSATE OF CILICIA PARTICIPATES IN THE MEETING OF ORTHODOX
AND ORIENTAL ORTHODOX CHURCHES
A meeting was held between the representatives from the Orthodox Churches
and the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the Greek city of Volos on September
19-22.
The purpose of the meeting was to set the direction of discussions between
these two churches and the United Bible Societies.
Bishop Nareg Alemezian, Ecumenical Officer of the Catholicosate of Cilicia,
participated in the meeting on behalf of the Catholicosate. Hratch
Sarkissian, director of the Bible Society of Armenia, represented the
Catholicosate of All Armenians.
The participants discussed the results of the 1999 and 2004 meetings of
Orthodox Churches and Bible Societies in Larnaca and Antelias respectively.
They laid out the plans for future cooperation.
Bishop Nareg highlighted the warm cooperation between the Catholicosate of
Cilicia and the Bible Society of Lebanon, especially in the fields of
translation and preparation of textbooks.
The participants decided to hold the next meeting between the Orthodox
Churches and United Bible Societies on October 15-22.
His Holiness Aram I has played an important role in the strengthening of
cooperation between United Bible Societies and the Orthodox Churches. Four
years ago the General Secretary of the United Bible Societies visited His
Holiness Aram I to consult on issues related to cooperation between the
society and the Orthodox Churches. Two meetings between the two sides, one
in Larnaca the other in Antelias, followed.
On his way back to Antelias, Bishop Nareg visited the Coptic Orthodox church
being built in Athens. He conveyed His Holiness’ greetings to the believers
and delivered a lecture entitled “The Birth of the Armenian Church and the
Catholicosate of Cilicia Today.”

HIS HOLINESS CONTINUES HIS PONTIFICAL VISIT TO CANADA
ARMENIAN STUDENTS GREET HIS HOLINESS IN MONTREAL
On the second day of his Pontifical visit to Canada, His Holiness Aram I met
with Armenian students from the “Sarafian” Elementary and “Pasdermadjian”
Secondary sections of the St. Hagop national school, as well as children
from the kindergarten of the Armenian Relief Society.
Students greeted His Holiness Aram I, Prelate Archbishop Khajag Hagopian,
religious officials, representatives form the diocese and the board of
trustees with enthusiasm. Both sections presented well-prepared performances
in honor of His Holiness, with the student choir delivering a series of
beautiful religious hymns.
“The Armenian School is a mission; it’s the extension of the Armenian family
and church. Your parents have entrusted you to this institution so you would
be enriched with our national values and cultural treasures and one day
enrich our nation yourselves,” said His Holiness.
His Holiness commended the school’s administration, the Prelate, the board
of trustees and the teachers for their dedication. He highlighted the
numerous sacrifices taken by Armenian national institutions in preserving
Armenian schools.
Speaking with the Armenian teen, His Holiness called on them to overcome the
challenges of preserving the Armenian national identity.
“It’s not a regular school you’re attending; you’re attending an Armenian
School. The difference between regular schools and the Armenian School does
not preside in the walls or desks; the difference is in the unique formation
you’re given here,” said His Holiness Aram I.
The Catholicos stressed that the youth succeeds “only if it discusses
tomorrow’s agenda today.” “You are not the Armenians of tomorrow; you’re the
Armenians of today. We not only need you tomorrow; we also need you today,
because you are not only our future, you are also our present,” said His
Holiness.

After his Pontifical visit to the St. Hagop School, His Holiness met with
the Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Church, Soterios.
The two spiritual leaders discussed ecumenical and inter-church issues.
International efforts for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the
restoration of the Armenian people’s rights also featured on the agenda.
The Catholicos and the Metropolitan also exchanged souvenirs. His Holiness
gave a copy of “Cilicia’s Salvaged Treasure”, a book about the masterpieces
of Cilician culture salvaged from the Armenian Genocide.

HIS HOLINESS MEETS WITH ARMENIAN ORGANIZATIONS IN MONTREAL
“ANTELIAS’ PRAYER IS COMMITMENT, STRUGGLE AND SERVICE”
SAYS THE PONTIFF
His Holiness Aram I met with around 250 leaders and representatives from
the Armenian community of Montreal on September 2005.
Representatives from Montreal’s Armenian political, cultural, educational,
social, sports’ and youth organizations and unions, religious officials,
teachers of Sunday Schools, members of their boards of trustees greeted His
Holiness in the “Aharonian” hall of Montreal’s Armenian Center (“Hay
Getron”).
Viken Tufenkjian delivered the opening remarks, speaking about His
Holiness’ 10-year tenure. Tufenkjian highlighting the wide scope of the work
carried out during this time and the flourishing of the Catholicosate of
Cilicia with all its dioceses as a result.
Tufenkjian also spoke about His Holiness’ international, ecumenical
activities, due to which the Armenian Church and the Catholicosate claimed
their rightful place in the community of churches.
Prelate Archbishop Khajag Hagopian then invited His Holiness to have an
honest discussion with the representatives of the community about issues
related to the Armenian Church and the nation’s collective life.
His Holiness welcomed the attendants, extending his Pontifical blessings
to them. He spoke about the role of the Armenian Church vis-à-vis the
challenges of the current world.
“Our church has an urgent need of reform. Today’s world has changed and
our church should adopt measures suitable to the current circumstances so
its service would be more effective,” said His Holiness.
His Holiness also spoke about the necessity of approaching the youth and
listening to their expectations. “The church is not a regular institution;
it’s a mission, a movement. Therefore, it has to approach the youth, not
only attracting them but also involving them in its mission.”
“Christian education should adopt new methods particularly in passing the
church’s moral teachings to Armenian children. Today’s religions should work
together to bring out the common aspects of their moral teachings and to
face the challenges of the current world,” stated His Holiness.
The Catholicos expressed his thoughts on Armenia-Diaspora cooperation. His
Holiness considered the strong Diaspora, which has preserved its Armenian
identity, as imperative for the strengthening of Armenia. His Holiness
assured that the true path for Armenia and the Diaspora is for each to
carefully carry out its role.
His Holiness Aram I also spoke about the efforts for the restoration of
the Armenian nation’s life and the work carried out within the context of
the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. He highlighted the role of
the Catholicosate of Cilicia in this respect in the past decades.
“The church has a right to pursue this just cause, because it is the
foremost protector of human rights. Second, as a national church our church
can not remain indifferent to our nation’s suffering. Third, the
Catholicosate of Cilicia is itself a victim of the Armenian Genocide; with
its people, it is the holder of its rights and will therefore be the pursuer
of those rights until their restoration,” said His Holiness.
At the end of the meeting His Holiness questions related to national,
ecclesiastical, ecumenical and political issues concerning the Armenian
nation’s collective aims and worries.
Similar meetings are scheduled to take place with the youth in many cities
within the three dioceses of Northern America.

ELECTIONS
Today the elections of local governing bodies are organized in 7 communities
of Yerevan. In Kentron and Arabkir the citizens are electing community heads
and aldermen, and in Avan, Ajapnyak, Davtashen, Malatia-Sebastia and
Shengavit – only alderman.
The citizens of the Kentron Community are to make their choice between the
present head of the community Gagik Beglaryan and the member of the People’s
Party Rouzan Khachatryan, and the citizens of Arabkir – between Hovhannes
Shahinyan and member of the United Labor Party David Gyuloumyan.
In the Kentron Community there are 26 candidates for the posts of aldermen,
in Ajapnyak there are 43.
According to the information provided by the Central Electoral Community,
22311 citizens have fulfilled their civic duty. Among them are the RA
President Robert Kocharyan and the Defense Minister Serge Sargsyan.

SHOT FIRED FROM AZERBAIJANI SIDE IN DIRECTION OF OBSERVATION MISSION
OF CONTACT LINE OF NKR AND AZERBAIJANI ARMED FORCES
STEPANAKERT, SEPTEMBER 23, NOYAN TAPAN. The OSCE mission held a plan
observation of the contact line of the Armed Forces of Nagorno
Karabakh and Azerbaijan near the settlement of Gharakhanbeyli, Fizulu
region, on September 20.
Just at the beginning of the observation, a shot was fired from the
Azerbaijani side in the direction of the observation mission. The
shot was fixed by the OSCE representatives. The observation was
stopped for security reasons by an instruction of Andrej Kasprczik,
the head of the observation from the Azerbaijani side, the Personal
Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.
As Noyan Tapan was informed by the NKR Foreing Ministry’s Information
and Analytical Department, Leautenant-Colonel Imre Palatinus
(Hungary), the Office Coordinator of the Personal Representative of
the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Peter Kea (Great Britain) and Harry
Eronen (Finland) Field Assistants of the Personal Representative of
the OSCE Chairman-in-Office and Colonel Andrey Korotkov (Russia), a
representative of the OSCE high level planning group were in the
group implementing observation from positions of the NKR Defence
Army.
>From the Karabakh side the observation mission was accompanied by
representatives of the NKR Defence Ministry and the NKR Foreign
Affairs Ministry.

Gul: Turkish people are at peace with their history
Istanbul
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul sent a message to the opening session of the
Armenian conference on Saturday:”The Turkish people are at peace with
themselves and with our history,” he added that, ”the approaches of our
government and our people towards our past, including Turkish-Armenian
relations, constitute an indication of our confidence in ourselves and our
future.”
In his message, Gul said, ”the last era of the Ottoman Empire is subject to
discussion and research in academic circles, with increased interest. Nearly
every day new documents from the era emerge and new books, articles and
research papers are published. Yet, it is not possible to say that all data
and documents related to those times have been properly analyzed. With an
aim to help redress this shortcoming, our government is in the process of
taking important steps to enable the Ottoman Archives to serve researchers,
in modern conditions. Our Archives have begun to serve scientists through
documents converted to a digital medium since 2003. Within this context,
many researchers, coming from 75 different countries have completed their
research on the Ottoman Archives. These activities are ongoing.”
”We want not only our own archives but at the same time all other archives
that will shed light on the history of the day to be opened in an organized
fashion, that will serve all researchers. We believe that deeper research
into that era will bring new historical facts to light and serve an
improvement in relations between countries and peoples. Thus, we have
proposed to the Government of Armenia to establish a historical commission
between our two countries, which will research the joint Turkish-American
history and which will make its findings public. We hope to reach a
conclusion on this subject,” indicated Gul.
Gul also said, ”The history of Turkish-Armenian relations is one of
co-existence and common life of almost 1,000 years. During the course of
this period, the Turkish and Armenian peoples have contributed to each
other’s culture, prosperity and security. We should not ignore this reality
when we examine the tragic period when the Ottoman Empire was crumbling and
the Turks and Armenians were deeply suffering, like all other peoples of the
Empire.”
”It is a fact that in some chapters of history, or even today, some
societies cannot tolerate one other’s language, religion, identity or even
very existence. It is an unfortunate reality that such intolerance can turn
into a deep-rooted and destructive ideology, which gets ingrained in the
social subconscious. Some serious and very dangerous trends, from xenophobia
to racism and from anti-Semitism to attitudes against Muslims are present
and are on the rise today, even in societies which represent the highest
level of contemporary civilization,” underlined Gul.
Gul stressed, ”it is a source of pleasure that such a psychology does not
exist between the Turks and Armenians. This also constitutes a major
advantage for the future of relations between the two peoples.”
”Another issue I want to draw your attention to is that, many studies so
far held on the theme of the Conference, particularly outside Turkey, have
been conducted with political motivations, in a manner inconsistent with
scientific ethics and objectivity. Regretfully, humanitarian issues have
been sacrificed to political designs, and double standards have been applied
in determining and presenting human suffering. There were attempts to impose
subjective, non-legal and artificial claims upon Turkey and the Turkish
people, with political motivations. Furthermore, there have been situations
in which some foreign circles could not even tolerate scientific
skepticism,” said Gul.
Gul concluded, ”young generations from all nations must know and draw
lessons from the facts that during the last era of the Ottoman Empire the
imperialist-colonial powers ruthlessly exploited peoples’ ethno-religious
sensitivities for their own gains and that some elements, knowingly or
unknowingly, became instruments to these provocations. I hope that your
Conference will be a contribution to raise awareness on this issue. The
Turkish people is at peace with itself and with its history. The approaches
of our government and our people towards our past, including
Turkish-Armenian relations, constitute an indication of our confidence in
ourselves and our future. I convey my best wishes to all participants and
hope that the Conference will be a success.”

JOURNALISTS HAVE FREE ENTRANCE
Today in several electoral areas, particularly in 9/41 and 9/15, the heads
of the Committees tried to hinder the work of the journalists of «A1+».
In the Kentron community 9/15 area the secretary tried to prove that «A1+»
is not registered and the journalist has not right to take photos or to stay
in the area. They allowed us to enter the area only after calling the
Central Electoral Committee.
And in the area 9/41 the claimed that the journalist certificate is not
enough to take photos. It was allowed again after calling the Central
Electoral Committee.
It is worth reminding that the Central Electoral Committee has announced
that the journalists can enter the electoral areas with their certificates
and highlight the course of elections without any problems.

SEIZURE OF PLACES
Today the NA deputy Grigor Haroutyunyan was not able to fulfill his duty as
confidant of Rouzan Khachatryan. Visiting the Kentron Community electoral
area 934 he found out that there was another confidant there named Rouben
Saroukhanyan.
No one knows who he is and with what certificate he has come, as they
informed from the pre-electoral headquarters of Rouzan Khachatryan that
Rouben Saroukhanyan is not in the lists they have represented. By the way,
the latter refused to leave the area and give his place to the real
confidant.
Alongside with this case, there were many «self-invited confidants» of
Rouzan Khachatryan in different electoral areas. They informed from the
headquarters that their representatives went to the areas early in the
morning and learned that other have already taken their places. They managed
to oust the self-invited confidants from the areas with difficulty.

DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER AREA
At about 12:45 120 citizens had visited the Kentron community electoral area
9/30. The head of the community Sargis Khachaturyan claimed that there have
been no mistakes except four in the electoral rolls, that is 4 people did
not find their names in the rolls, `We sent them to the court, but one of
the did not come back’, Sargis Khachaturyan said.
`Everything is fine, there are no errors’, announced member of the
Committee, representative of the Justice bloc Juleta Ovanesova.
By the way, at that very moment the CoE observer David Lloyd-Williams was in
the electoral area alarmed by information about violations of law there. It
turned out that an elector of another area tried to elect there.
No other violations have been recorded.
