The Armenian Revolutionary Federation does not have shortage of
members, said Hrair Karapetyan, ARF, on May 26. For the forced
affiliation of school teachers with the Republican Party, Hrair
Karapetyan said it is unacceptable to force people to join a party.
He only stated that Dashnaktsutiun took up the portfolio of education
and science but it is not likely to force teachers become members of
Dashnaktsutiun.
`Levon Mkrtichyan has already occupied the post of the minister
ofeducation and culture, but nothing of the kind would ever happen. If
we had wanted to do, we could have done it last time. People would
learn and write about it,’ says Hrair Karapetyan. He says
Dashnaktsutiun does not have shortage of members, and they accept only
one out of one hundred applicants. Hrair Karapetyan says they do not
even give tickets to ARF members. `Their faces are their tickets,’
jokes Hrair Karapetyan.

The controversy surrounded the firing of US Ambassador to Armenia John
Marshall Evans continued to grow this week with a powerful statement
by the Co-Chairman of the Armenian Caucus, calls for Congressional
hearings, and a series of as yet unanswered inquiries from the
national media during the State Department’s daily press briefing,
reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
In a May 25th statement on the House floor, Congressman Frank Pallone
(D-NJ) forcefully condemned the Administration for forcing Ambassador
Evans to vacate his post for publicly affirming the Armenian
Genocide. He voiced his “fear that the Government of Turkey may have
played a role in this unfortunate event. I strongly believe they have
expressed concern to the White House over Evans’ remarks last year. In
fact, immediately following his remarks, Evan issued a “correction,”
all too seemingly at the behest of the Administration. We must not
allow a third party to interfere in US diplomacy and refrain from
declaring the truth in order to promote relations with Turkey.”
Congressman Pallone noted that he has yet to receive an explanation
from the State Department, despite having written a letter to the
Secretary more than two months ago requesting a thorough description
of the reasons behind the Ambassador’s recall. Commenting on similar
unanswered letters and questions posed during Congressional hearings
regarding this controversy, he noted that, “now, the White House has
made an ‘official’ announcement but still has not given an
explanation.” He closed by expressing his “hope that the
newly-appointed US Ambassador to Armenia, Richard Hoagland, will not
play the word games of the White House, and comply with Turkey’s
campaign of genocidal denial.”

occasion of the Republic Day. The message says, in particular,
`I congratulate you on Republic Day. Independence was the
centuries-long target of the Armenian people, which became reality due
to our people’s struggle for liberation and especially the heroic

Baku, 26 May, Trend correspondent R. Abdullayev: Azerbaijani President
Ilham Aliyev made a speech on 26 May in Baku at an official ceremony
to mark Azerbaijan’s national holiday – the Day of the Republic, Trend
reports.
The head of state highly rated the establishment of the Democratic
Republic of Azerbaijan in 1918 and stressed the historical role of the
founders of Azerbaijan’s statehood.
Touching on developments that unfolded in Azerbaijan during the
collapse of the Soviet Union and on the threat of the repeat collapse
of national statehood, Ilham Aliyev pointed out that statehood was
preserved owing to the efforts of ex-President Heydar Aliyev.
The president pointed out that in the following period, Azerbaijan
became the most dynamically developing country, which was a direct
result of the successful policy of political-economic reforms carried
out by the republic’s leadership.
He said that Azerbaijan is strengthening its positions not only on the
regional, but also on the world scale. “Azerbaijan is implementing an
economic concept that aims to increase the welfare of the country’s
population,” Ilham Aliyev said.
The head of state also touched on the settlement of the
Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagornyy Karabakh conflict and stressed that
Azerbaijan is in favour of a peaceful solution to the problem. He said
that if Armenia’s nonconstructive position leads to a deadlock in the
negotiating process, “Azerbaijan should resolve the problem with its
own forces”.
President Aliyev clearly said that “Azerbaijan will not allow a second
Armenian state to be created on its territory” and added that “all the
occupied territories of Azerbaijan should be liberated without any
conditions”.
