Police prevented hundreds of Armenian worshipers from taking part
in a sacred pre-Easter ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher
Saturday.

Armenian church officials said the police behaved rudely to church
members and senior clergy and arrested four Armenians near the Old
City police station, releasing them only after the Armenians stopped
the festive procession to the church in protest.

Armenian Archbishop Nourhan Manougian told Haaretz that the police
only allowed 400 of 700 Armenian pilgrims to enter the church for
the Ceremony of the Holy Fire, despite the fact that all had entry
permits, as required by police, he said.

“Israel always declares that it allows free access to the holy places
but in fact the police acted like a despot to the pilgrims. There
were some who had come especially for the ceremony from the U.S.,
from Canada and from Australia who were not allowed in,” continued
Manougian.

During the ceremony, a flame, believed by some faithful to be
miraculously ignited, illuminated thousands of worshipers’ torches
and candles at the church, as tense hours of waiting and shoving
culminated in the celebration of the rite.

Believers see the passage of the flame among worshipers as connecting
many of the 200 million Orthodox Christians worldwide to their
spiritual roots.

The ritual dates back at least 1,200 years. The precise details of
the flame’s source are a closely guarded secret, but some believe it
appears spontaneously from the burial area, as a message from Jesus on
the eve of the Orthodox Easter that he has not forgotten his followers.

Some 3,000 police were involved in security at the ceremony, which
was attended by approximately 15,000 pilgrims.

Manougian met on the eve of the ceremony with the commander of the
Jerusalem district of the police, Major General Ilan Franko, and
asked him to treat the pilgrims politely. However he said Franko
“spoke to me as if I were a student of his, and hinted all the time
that if we did not abide by the agreements…”

The Jerusalem police responded that officers had detained a number of
intoxicated individuals who had joined the Armenian procession and were
behaving wildly. They were released when they calmed down, police said.

With regard to complaints that Armenian worshipers were pushed,
police said it was Armenian clergy who had pushed Russian pilgrims
trying to join the procession, and that officers had intervened only
to separate the two sides.

Police also said Franko had conducted talks in recent weeks with
all sides involved in the ceremony, and had reached an agreement
acceptable to all. “The meeting ended with embraces and kisses,
and so Archbishop Manougian’s claims are surprising,” police said.

Kocharian: Armenia Not Going to Join NATO

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ “Armenia is not going to join the
NATO,” Armenian President Robert Kocharian said, when
answering a question of the Golos Armenii. He stated
it in response to the newspaper’s request to comment
on Armenian Speaker Artur Baghdassaryan’s statement to
the Frankfurter Allgemaine that “EU and NATO are the
future of Armenia” and “Russia should not be on the
way to the Europe.” Commenting on the statement
Kocharian said, “Armenia’s foreign policy line remains
unchanged. Within the NATO-Armenia Individual
Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) our country is
expanding the cooperation with the North-Atlantic
Alliance, as a key European security organization. We
expect effective cooperation, especially in reform of
the Armed Forces and peacekeeping. However, Armenia is
not going to join the NATO. Participation in the
Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the
high level of military and technical cooperation with
Russia properly solve security issues.” In the words
of the Armenian leader, today Armenia prepares to
closer cooperation with the EU within the European
Neighborhood Policy (ENP), however does not formulate
the question of accession to the EU. “Euro-Atlantic
ambitions of Armenia are balanced, realistic, are
positively taken by European structures and do not
form problems in relations with Russia. We declare the
same position in Moscow, Brussels and Washington,” the
Armenian President said.

fully use all mechanisms being created to solve the
conflict,” he stated. Semneby hopes there is a chance

Harvard Expert: Events in 1915 Are Genocide by All
Criteria of Genocide

22.04.2006 21:17 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Leading politicians and groups from
a range of communities are joining with Armenians in
their battle to ensure that the Armenians’
early-20th-century history be taught as genocide,
writes the Boston Globe. As the article Armenians Get
Allies in Genocide Teachings, the Armenians are
fighting a federal lawsuit that seeks to include
opposing views of the Armenian Genocide in teaching
materials for Massachusetts high schools. A rally
yesterday at the State House drew representatives from
the diverse coalition, including members of local
Jewish and Irish communities, as well as the
prosecutor general and the vice-governor of the State,
who intend to run for Massachusetts governor, in a
testament to the political clout that the Armenian
community has in Massachusetts.

In its turn the Boston Herald cites Harvard genocide
expert Helen Fein. “It is a genocide by all criteria
of genocide,” said Fein, director of the Institute for
the Study of Genocide. “It’s insulting and ridiculous
to argue with these deniers,” she said. “Given the
fact that Turkey continues its denial campaign, it
becomes that much more important for the U.S. and
other countries to remember and reaffirm what happened
so we cannot repeat the mistakes of the past,” said
Bryan Ardouny, head of the Armenian Assembly of
America (AAA).

“Dealertainer” Sandra Daly (L) gets herself ready as singer Gwen
Stefani while Karine Martirosyan fixes her Marilyn Monroe wig as they
prepare to deal blackjack at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino
April 19, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martirosyan, 37, immigrated
to the United States from Armenia in 2000 and became a U.S. citizen
in November 2005. In her home country, she worked in a hospital as
a doctor, specializing in infectious diseases, after graduating
from Yerevan State Medical University in the country”s capital.
Martirosyan said she decided to come to America after the breakup of
the Soviet Union and the resulting increased tensions with neighboring
Azerbaijan caused a downward turn in the Armenian economy. She obtained
a visa and moved to Las Vegas where she only knew one friend from
Armenia and a distant relative. Martirosyan, who speaks Armenian
and Russian, studied English for two years before starting to take
nursing classes at the Community College of Southern Nevada and the
University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In order to help pay for school, she
took gaming dealer classes, and now works at the casino impersonating
Monroe and singer Christina Aguilera. She said she earns a great deal
more working full time as a dealer in Las Vegas than as a doctor
in Armenia. Martirosyan is not sure what her future holds, as the
Imperial Palace was recently purchased by Harrah”s Entertainment, Inc.,
and is expected to be torn down and replaced. She is waiting for an
evaluation by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools
to see if her combined U.S. and Armenian college work qualifies her
to take Nevada”s nursing board test to become a registered nurse.
