ARMENIA TOPS THE LIST

The Armenian national chess team plays successfully in the World
Chess Olympiad in Turin and has good chances of becoming champion for
the first time.
In the third round the Armenian Grand Masters beat the team of the
Netherlands 3:1 which was in the second place before that. Levon
Aronyan and Gabriel Sargsyan celebrated wins, and Vladimir Hakobyan
and Karen Asryan tied.
By the way, in the 6th round the Netherlands had beaten the main
rivals of Armenia, the team of Russia which in its turn beat Belarus
in this round 3:1.
In the 8th round our Grand Masters will play with the team of Cuba
which has 19.5 points.

The markets of the Gegharqounik region as well as the community of
village Nor Getashen still continue selling whitefish. Although by the
order of the RA Ministry of Ecology it is prohibited to catch
whitefish in 2006, still fishing does not stop in Sevan.
Mainly small fish is sold in the markets: weighing 50-150 grams and
costing 100 AMD each. In answer to our inquiries the Ecology
administration of the Gegharqounik region said that the national park
`Sevan’ and the RA Ministry of Ecology are responsible for prohibiting
fishing.
So, in contrast to the previous years no control has been exercised in
the lake.

PACE Session in Moscow

PACE SESSION IN MOSCOW

The cultural diversity of Northern Caucasus will be one of the issues
of the agenda of the PACE session. In the session which will take
place in Moscow today the Chechnya issue will most probably not be
discussed. PACE President Rene van der Linden and RF Foreign Minister
Sergey Lavrov will participate in the session. The latter presides
over the CE Ministers’ Committee.
The report about Northern Caucasus will be the first `peaceful’ report
in the PACE. According to author of the report Ann Braser it has
nothing to do with the defense of human rights, the issue of refugees
and the humanitarian situation. Ass Braser visited the region last
September. The PACE reporter thinks that education and culture can
have their contribution to the balancing of situation in Northern
Caucasus.

A joint laboratory center to fight bird flu in CIS countries may be
opened in Russia, Director of the institute of flu investigation
of the Medical Academy of Sciences of Russia Oleg Kiselyov told
“Interfax” Agency.
“We try to unite the CIS countries and to lay the basis of a real
cooperation, since we are interested in controlling the bird flu
situation in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and other CIS member
states,” the specialist said.
“It is especially important to control the situation where bird flu
cases have been registered,” he underlined.
The center to be opened in Moscow or Novosibirsk will carry out
inspection and will control the situation.

Armenian men’s team is leading in the 37th World Chess Olympic Games
held in Turin. The team has gained 21 points in 7 rounds. In the 6th
round the Armenian scored 2.5:1.5 against Uzbekistan and in the 7th
round played 3:1 with the Dutch. With 20 points the Russian team is
the second. The team of Cuba is in the third place with 19.5 points.
In the 8th round today the Armenian chess players will meet the team
of Cuba.

VARDAN OSKANYAN: PARTIES TO THE KARABAKH CONFLICT STILL TOO FAR FROM SIGNING A DOCUMENT

During the meeting in Bucharest scheduled June 4-5 Presidents of
Armenia and Azerbaijan Robert Kocharyan and Ilham Aliev will be
suggested a document of principles of the Karabakh conflict settlement.
In case the parties agree upon the document, it will take the
shape of an agreement, RA Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan told
“Armenpress.” According to the Minister, no document is expected to
be signed in Bucharest; the parties “are still too far from signing a
document,” up to now some of the principles have not been agreed upon.
According to Vardan Oskanyan, progress in the settlement may be
expected any time. At this point, however, it depends on the meeting
of the Presidents.
In the Minister’s words, the visit of the high officials of the OSCE
Minsk Group Co-Chair countries and the Special Representative of the
OSCE Chairman-in-Office aimed at emphasizing the importance of the
next meeting of Presidents.
To remind, the meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan
will be arranged in the framework of the “Dialogue and Cooperation”
summit of the Black Sea countries.

May 28 hundreds of people gathered in Aparan to celebrate the
anniversaries of creation of the firs Republic of Armenia and the
heroic battle of Bash-Aparan. Later the celebration continued in the
square of stone-letters.
Hovhannes Tumanyan’s monument has been erected next to the letters
and the Anania Shirakatsi’s monument. It will be officially opened
next week.
When putting up the stone-letters, the initiators promised
that a complex of memorials would be founded all around Aragats
Mountain. Honorary President of “Nig Aparan” patriotic union Aghvan
Hovsepyan assured that monuments of all who created outstanding works
in Armenian will be erected in the square of letters.

Armenian consulate will open in Batumi soon, RA Ambassador to Georgia
Hrach Silvanyan stated upon completion of the meeting with chairman of
the Adjarian government Levan Varshalomidze. In his words, the opening
of the consulate will contribute to the development of cooperation
between Georgia and Armenia in the tourism sector. Hrach Silvanyan
did not rule out that in the near future Armenia will make major
investments in Ajaria, specifically in the output of dairy products
and construction of restaurants.
