TURKISH `HOSPITALITY’ TO ARMENIAN CATHOLICOS
The prosecutor’s office of Istanbul has filed a lawsuit against
Supreme Patriarch of All Armenians Karekin II on charge of “insulting
Turkish dignity”. According to Turkish media, during his Turkey visit
the Armenian Catholicos “made statements insulting Turkish self-esteem
by saying that Turkey has to recognize the killings of 1.5 million
Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as a genocide.”
The prosecutor’s office says that it’s impossible to take Karekin II’s
affidavit as there is no cooperation agreement between Armenia and
Turkey in the sphere of jurisprudence. But the office can take a
decision of detaining the Catholicos once he tries to enter Turkey
again.

STATEMENTS OF BRYZA STILL DISCUSSED
Armenian Republican Party block leader Galust Sahakyan does not think
that the open statement made by newly appointed OSCE Minsk Group
co-chairman Mathew Bryza is a leak of dangerous information. He thinks
the disclosure does not aim to make public aware of the process. `I
think a new atmosphere is being created to understand how such
processes will be accepted in Armenia and Azerbaijan. It must be said
that the American side creates an atmosphere for Azerbaijan proceeding
from his own economic interest instead of making statements on
Karabakh conflict regulation. But our political field is such that we
are ready to manipulate on certain issues,’ NA deputy G. Sahakyan told
a news conference today. According to him the document should become
public for larger public awareness.
In the words of G. Sahakyan, the focal point of any proposal should be
the status of Nagorno Karabakh with all the rest stemming from it.
Speaking about the American expert’s statement on regression of
democracy in Armenia, the politician said, `they are subjective
statements based on economic interests. It is evident that Armenia and
Azerbaijan are not comparable in terms of democracy. Even Turkey is
more democratic than Azerbaijan.’ /Panorama.am/

ONE MORE AIR GATE MODERNIZED IN ARMENIA
One more air gate is modernized in Armenia, namely, Shirak airport in
Gyumri. Particularly, the dispatcher tower is put into commission in a
ceremonial opening today. Hayaironavigation CJSC concluded a contract
with Check ERA in 2004 to import P3D system in Armenia, particularly
in Gyumri Shirak airport. According to specialists, the system works
well especially in mountainous regions because it ensures better
visibility.
Hayaironavigation CJSC director Eduard Mulsoyan mentions that the
installation of the system is implemented exclusively on the incomes
of the company. According to him, about USD 700,000 is invested,
including USD 200,000 on Check equipment and USD 500,000 for
reconstruction of the facilities.
The unit has 40 employees. Four of them have passed training in Check
Republic and Great Britain. At the moment, Gyumri airport complies
with international norms in terms of dispatcher and navigation
services./Panorama.am/

REPUBLICAN MP PREDICTS NO MAJOR CHANGES IN NEXT
PARLIAMENT

YEREVAN, JUNE 30, ARMENPRESS; A senior member of
the governing Republican party of prime minister
Andranik Margarian has downplayed media speculations
and expert forecast that the next Armenian parliament
will be made of quite different forces, saying to a
news conference today that all those forces which are
now in it will win seats as well in 2007 polls.
Galust Sahakian, head of the party’s parliamentary
faction, even made his own forecast saying the
opposition will win as many as 30 seats or even more.
Sahakian did not rule out that the Prosperous Armenia
of Gagik Tsarukian, a recently set up, but rapidly
expanding party and other out -of -parliament forces
may also win seats in the parliament given they choose
a right strategy.
Sahakian said he had no doubts that his Republican
Party will win more seats than any other party, but
said the decision to form an alliance could be made
only after the polls. Sahakian also ruled out pre-term
parliamentary elections because ‘there is no such
need.” Sahakian said it was not yet clear whether
defense minister Serzh Sarkisian will join the
Republican party.
Armenian media has been speculating that Sarkisian
will announce his joining the Republican party at its
congress slated for July 22. Local newspapers also
claimed Sarkisian will co-chair the party and top its
list of candidates for next year’s parliamentary
elections.

Gyumri Airport Firnished with Modern Flight Control System

GYUMRI AIRPORT FURNISHED WITH MODERN FLIGHT CONTROL
SYSTEM
GYUMRI, JUNE 30, ARMENPRESS: Chief of Armenian
Civil Aviation Artyom Movsisian and Radomir Hervert, a
manager from Czech ERA company dealing with P3D
systems traveled to Armenia’s Gyumri to inaugurate the
Air Traffic Management Center at its Shirak airport.
Movsisian said the agreement with the Czech company
on installment of this type center at Gyumri airport
had been signed in 2004. He said P3D systems operate
effectively at mountain airports ensuring a greater
visibility because radars there are not often
sufficient to control flights from the ground.
Hervert said the system had been tested
successfully in various climatic conditions and
especially in such which are close to climatic
conditions in Armenia. The airport in Gyumri operates
now one flight a day. Its management is carrying out a
set of projects to improve its capacities.

Armenian Side Must Qualitatively Change Disposition to Talk Process

ARMENIAN SIDE MUST QUALITATIVELY CHANGE ITS DISPOSITION TO TALK
PROCESS: SHAVARSH KOCHARYAN
The statement of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen must qualitatively
change the disposition of the Armenian side to Karabakh conflict
regulation, deputy of National Assembly Shavarsh Kocharyan told a
discussion today on the problems of refugees from Azerbaijan.
In his words, consistency must be observed in international relations
whereas one side is continuously attacking without supporting fact and
the other has `to defend’ itself with some documents. Sh. Kocharyan
noted asymmetric attitude of OSCE MG to the issue of refugees saying
that the Armenian side not the mediators are to be blamed for
that. The Armenian parliament thinks it obvious to suspend the talk
process on conflict regulation in relation to raising the issue of
refugees.
On June 28, 8 public organizations signed an agreement on protection
of rights and freedoms of refugees from Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan. The
organizations formed a net of civic society called `Refugees and
International Right.’
Based on the agreement, the public organizations issued a statement
saying that the problems of Armenian national refugees must be
included in the talk process of Nagorno Karabakh conflict regulation
no matter what format they will follow. The statement says in
particularly that taking into consideration that Armenians made up 8%
of the population of Azerbaijan it would be appropriate to provide
them with 8% territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan./Panorama.am/

There Can’t Be One Sided Compromise

THERE CAN’T BE ONE-SIDED COMPROMISE
[05:27 pm] 30 June, 2006
«Gas pipeline Baku-Erzrum is already being exploited, and the regions
turns into a transit region of oil and gas pipelines where billions
have been invested», economist Edward Aghajanov announced today.
Answering the question of `A1+’ how the settlement of the Karabakh
conflict will influence the economic development of the region
Mr. Aghajanov answered, `Investments in the region are so huge that
the investors will not allow the destabilization of the situation. If
the process of the settlement of the Karabakh conflict is frozen,
Armenia will be left out of all the regional programs’.
Mr. Aghajanov almost excludes the possibility or re-launching
war. `The existence of energy bridges in the region excludes all
possibility of war. A couple of shots are enough for the region to
face an ecological disaster and to be deprived of the alternative
sources of oil and gas’.
Approaching the issue from the point of view of the economic
development of the region Mr. Aghajanov said that the Minsk group
co-chairs are not disappointed at all and they intend to see the
settlement of the conflict will the end of 2007. According to Mr.
Aghajanov, the only possibility of the settlement is equal
compromise. `If we make a compromise, we must receive something
specific in return, for instance clearing the status of Karabakh right
away and not in future’.
Referring to the fact that only the Armenians speak about giving
territories whereas many Armenians regions (Shahoumyan, Getashen,
Artsvashen) are taken by the Azeris, Mr. Aghajanov said,
`Unfortunately, the authorities have never raised the issue. If they
did, Shahoumyan and Getashen are equal to Qelbajar and
Lachin. Compromise must be equivalent. There can be no one-sided
compromise’.

Armenian Refugees Have Demands

ARMENIAN REFUGEES HAVE DEMANDS
[04:48 pm] 30 June, 2006
Since 1988 about 400 thousand Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan and
Nakhijevan have found refuge in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh
Republic. Several NGOs gathered together today in order to announce
that they will fight for the rights of the refugees and appealed to
the society and the international community to support the violated
rights of the refugees.
Eight NGOs have adopted a statement and an agreement about the
protection of the rights of those people who were evicted from
Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan. According to expert Souren Zolyan, the
document is quite literate but will need explanation in future.
«The announcement states once more that the Armenian side must change
its approaches and the policy not only about the settlement of the
Karabakh conflict but also about the whole region», deputy Shavarsh
Kocharyan said. He noted that if you stop speaking about the Sumgayit
slaughters, the Azeri start speaking about the Khojalu «genocide».
That is, according to Mr. Kocharyan, the Azeris attack us without
having enough ground, whereas we don’t use the real facts we have.
By the way, the statement will be submitted to the President of RA and
NKR, as well as to the Presidents of the Minsk group countries.
