IRANIAN SPEAKER ARRIVES IN ARMENIA

Yerevan, 11 September: A parliamentary delegation of the Islamic
Republic of Iran, led by Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel,
arrived in Yerevan today on a two-day official visit at the invitation
of the chairman of the Armenian National Assembly, Tigran Torosyan.
During his visit Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel will meet
Tigran Torosyan. The Iranian delegation will then have an expanded
meeting with members of parliamentary commissions, factions and groups
of the National Assembly.
The Iranian delegation will lay wreath at the memorial to the victims
of the Armenian genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.
The Iranian guests will also meet Armenian President Robert Kocharyan,
Prime Minister Andranik Markaryan, teachers and students of Yerevan
State University and visit the Blue Mosque.
The Iranian parliamentary delegation will leave Yerevan for Bishkek
on 12 September.

ANPP TO STOP FOR REFUELLING AND RECONSTRUCTION

October 1 the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) will stop for
replenishment and planned reconstruction. Director of the Plant
Gagik Markosyan told ” Armenpress” that besides the traditional
reconstruction works, this year it is envisaged to install a new
system, which will allow to raise the security of the Plant. The
reconstruction works will last 45 days. It should be noted also that
before the connection of the ANPP to the energy system of the Republic,
the demand of energy will be supplement due to the increase of the
volume of electric energy produced by Thermal Power Plants.

ARKADY VOLSKY PASSED AWAY

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ September 9 at the age of 75 Arkady Volsky died
owing to hard and continuous illness.
Arkady Volsky was a well-known public and state figure, Honorary
President and founder of the Russian Union of Industrialists and
Entrepreneurs that he headed for over 15 years.
In 1988 Arkady Volsky was the representative of the Central Committee
of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the USSR Supreme
Council Presidium in the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous District (NKAD)
of the Azerbaijani SSR, while since January 1989 he chaired the Special
Management Committee of the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous District.
In spring 1989 he was elected people’s deputy of the USSR from the
Stepanakert territorial electoral district, NKAD. He was a member
of the USSR Supreme Council Committee on Defense and State Security,
reports Interfax.

TODAY ARMENIAN DEFENSE MINISTER LEAVES FOR BULGARIA

Sargsyan will pay an official visit to Bulgaria September 11-13. As
Spokesperson for the Armenian MOD Head, Col. Seyran Shahsuvaryan told
PanARMENIAN.Net, within the framework of the visit S. Sargsyan will
meet with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and Defense Minister
Vesselin Bliznakov, as well as Deputy Chair of the People’s Assembly
of Bulgaria Peter Beroni and heads of the Parliamentary Defense
Commission.

NEW YORK COMMEMORATES SEPTEMBER 11 VICTIMS

tragedy in 200, when resulting from a terrorist attack on the World
Trade Center 3 thousand were killed. The mourning ceremony will start
with a minute of silence at 8.46 a.m., when the first plane hijacked
by the terrorists crashed into one of the twin skyscrapers. Then
bells will ring in New York churches.
Names of all established victims of the wreckage of the World Trade
Center will again read today. Rays of two searchlights will be aimed
in the sky from the empty space, where the buildings symbolizing New
York’s business power once were. That place is now called the zero
mark, where the building of over 500-meter-high Freedom Tower have
already begun, reports RIA Novosti.

TURKEY TO ACKNOWLEDGE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IF HISTORIANS TAKE CORRESPONDING DECISION

Representative at the talks with the EU Ali Babacan said that
Ankara will acknowledge the Armenian Genocide only in case the joint
Armenian-Turkish commission of historians confirms the fact. Babacan
said it in an interview published by Handelsblad Dutch newspaper and
titled “Genocide Recognition by Turkey Not Ruled Out”. When asked,
whether the Turkish government can admit a decision that will
characterize the events taken place at the beginning of the 20th
century as Genocide, the Turkish Minister said, “Yes, we will agree
with any decision.”
At the same time Babacan censured the resolution on the Armenian
Genocide adopted by the European Parliament and said that
“parliamentarians are not historians and the European Parliament is
not the institution to announce what really happened.”
According to him, “all the Turkish archives are open for scientists
and Turkey’s proposal on formation of a joint commission of historians
is still valid,” reported Mediamax.

ARMENIAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO BE HALTED FOR REFUELING

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS: Armenia’s nuclear power plant
in Metsamor will be brought to a halt on October 1 for a regular
maintenance and refueling.
Gagik Markosian, the director of the plant, said apart from regular
maintenance new systems enabling to raise the plant’s safety are to
be installed. He said the repair will take 45 days.
The nuclear plant accounts for about between 40-45 percent of all
power produced in Armenia. During the standstill hydro power plants
will increase their output to fill in the deficit.

CHURCH SERVICE TO OPEN INDEPENDENCE CEREMONIES

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS: A special church service dedicated
to the feast of Holy Cross in Etchmiadzin scheduled for September 17
will start a long array of ceremonies and events designed to mark the
15-th anniversary of Armenia’s independence from the former Soviet
Union that will be marked on September 21.
On September 17 also a photo exhibition called 15 Years of Independence
will open at Yerevan Moskva cinema house. The cinema house will also
hold a retrospective screening of several films dedicated to Armenian
independence.
On September 18 the third Armenia-Diaspora conference will open at
Karen Demirchian complex. The complex will host on September 19 a forum
called New Answers to Old Questions and an exhibition of post stamps.
On September 20 the Demirchian complex will host the official closure
of Armenia-Diaspora conference and a presentation of a silver medal
dedicated to the Independence anniversary.
On September 21 Republic Square will hold a military parade and a
service then will be held in Yerevan Saint Gregory Cathedral. On
September 22 the Demirchian complex will host an economic exhibition.

ANTI-CRIMINAL INITIATIVE STARTS CONSULTATIONS

On September 11 the representaties of 10 political forces
(National Democratic Union, Nor Zhamanakner, Fatherland and Honor,
People’s Fatherland, Republic, the Democratic Party, the Liberal
Progressive Party, Constitutional Right Union) marked the start a
series of consultations, which if organized well, will grow into
an anti-criminal coalition and an anti-criminal movement, aimed to
return power to people.
The activitsts of the movement say although the latest similar
meeting took place on the days of the referendum in November 2005,
and it is necessary to make a roll-call, it is clear that “there is
a wish to struggle”. All the oppositionist forces were invited to the
first meeting. It became clear that the invitation did not reach the
People’s Party of Armenia for technical reasons. The ARF Dashnaktsutyun
was only informed, the Republican Party was not invited. “What does
Dashnaktsutyun have to do here?” asked Smbat Ayvazyan, Republic
Party. “How can the government fight the criminal if they are not
masochists,” asked the leader of the National Democratic Union Vazgen
Manukyan. Besides questions there were also evaluations. Garnik
Margaryan, the leader of the Fatherland and Honor Party believes,
“The country is on the verge of destruction, the national security
is hanging on a thread, and remaining silent in this situation is
condemnable carelessness.”
The deputy leader of the National Unity Party Gagik Tadevosyan thinks
that if Serge Sargsyan says someone who has a nickname or does not
speak Armenian well is not necessarily a criminal, it is similarly
unnecessary that someone who has a nickname or speaks Armenian badly
become member of parliament or be in power.
The initiators of the anti-criminal movement also underline the
activity of the public, because the society seems to have started
to take murder and violence for granted. It is also important to
define the notion of criminal distinctly. By an initial variant,
the criminal is a community of criminals who do not obey the state
laws, live under their own laws and seek the obedience of the entire
society and wealth. After publishing the formula the representatives
of the anti-criminal movement are ready to publish the names of these
people. For the time being, however, all the political forces should
express their opinion on the anti-criminal movement, “to know who is
who, and who we are going to fight against.” The result of the battle
must be at least two normal general elections.
The next meeting of the anti-criminal initiative will take place
on September 15, already without journalists. The reason for this
secrecy is clear. It is unclear, however, why there are people among
the initiators who are said to cooperate with Serge Sargsyan. Not in
favor of the opposition, of course.

ONE OF THE YEREVAN STREETS CLOSED DOWN BECAUSE OF FIRE

At about 10:05 p.m. yesterday 120-square-meter roof of a 4-storeyed
building on Andrfederation 18 caught fire.
The Emergency Board and Rescuers’ Agency informed A1+ that the roof
of the building was completely burnt.
Fortunately, the fire didn’t spread too far, and there were neither
damages nor victims.
The inner part of the building is made of wood which contributed to
the quick spread of the fire. The Emergency Board has no information
on the causes of fire; they will be revealed only within 7 – 10 days.
It took two days to extinguish the fire. The fire was completely put
out at 00:29 a.m. The roads leading to the burning building closed
down in order not to prevent the work of the fire brigade and rescuers.
Fire-extinguishing cars from fire agencies 2, 3, 4 and 8 arrived
on the scene at 10:05 – 10:08 p.m. The second group of the rescuers
arrived at 11:05 p.m.
